Anyone have any good movies that center around battleships?

I remember the one about the Bismark, but there has to be others.

In Harm's Way has a surface battle in it, but the only battleship is the Yamato. The US had cruisers and destroyers in that film.

The movie about the Graf Spee at the River Plate is good, too. Don't remember what the title of it was.

You would think there'd be a movie about the battle of Jutland in WW 1. That was the greatest clash of battleships in history.

I wish someone would use all this new technology and recreate some of those old ships in movies.

Seemed like there were alot of "battleship" movies at one time, not so much about WW2 fighting ships in general. I am mainly interested in real battleship movies.

Imagine how bad being on the losing end of a battleship duel would have been. Much worse than Saving Private Ryan.

If you want to see battleship flicks, go to your local video store and rent the "Victory at Sea" tapes. They have all the real footage of naval battles.

If you just want to see movies that portray fictional battleship encounters, then go rent a fictional movie.

Men of Honor with Robert Deniro and Cuba Gooding Jr?

I know that doesn't fit into a category of battleships but it was a great movie that had some scenes on a battleship or ship of some sort :)

Its a shame that the battleship is so expensive to maintain in the modern era. It did cost less to refurbish each battleship than it did to build brand new destroyers. The maintenance is what kills them.

Any new movie ideas, gents?

Madrat, you're right, it is expensive to keep a battlewagon active, but there is no ship in the world that packs as much power or offers anywhere near the protection that a battleship does.

What happens when we have to land the Marines on a hostile beach and they need fire support? Where will it come from? How many 5" or 6" pop guns do some of our modern ships have now....1? 2?

Then what happens when the enemy shoots missiles at the ships supporting the landing? If a missle hits one of our modern ships, it's out of action and maybe sinks.

Lob a few Exocets at the Wisconsin and if a couple get through, no big deal. They can't sink a battleship with missles. They can tear up some of the superstructure, hamper communications, but they can't sink it and they can't stop the guns from firing.

That's why I'm glad the Wisconsin and the Iowa are kept in the highest state of inactive reserve....all the interior spaces are shut off and kept dehumidified...in case they need to be called up again.
I think it would take 6 months to get one ready, so if you hear that they've decided to reactivate one or both, look for something serious to happen in that time frame.

If the question is serious, I believe I saw in a history channel special on US battleships that the "big" guns onboard have been replaced by missiles much like the ones who fired into afghanistan in 98 (?). I cannot say this is the absolute truth but Im pretty sure thats correct.

No, it's not correct. All 4 Iowa class ships (Iowa, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Missouri) still have all 9 of their original 16" 50 caliber guns.

They were originally equipped with 20 5" guns, but did have a few of those turrets removed to make way for their Harpoon and Tomahawk missiles.
Best of both worlds. They have cruise missiles, surface to surface missiles, Phalanx CIWS guns, 5" turrets and 16" turrets.
