hi,

i was very happy with my 6870 for quite a while. today my monitor died, it was a older hyundai 19" which i used @1280x1024.

the new monitor prefers 1920x1080 which brings the game down to around 60-100fps while running and playing a little bit (few enemys) it really feels sluggish.

setting the resolution back to 1280x1024 gets the fps up to about 100-150. its really a different gameplay.

any ideas what would be a cost effective upgrade for this? assuming that i wont be playing battlefield 4 or any other new shooters. just want to have a round battlefield 3 from time to time.

i was thinking about the 560ti, but could this give me a 25%(30fps) performance boost?
ive read that bf3 is nvidia friendly, but the 560ti is only compared to 6970 or above which leaves me with no direct comparison.

Is your new monitor 60 Hz? Few monitors have a refresh rate higher than that and almost no monitors are over 120 Hz.

You probably should get a new card if you do plan on replacing (gtx 600 series or 7000 for amd).

I think this is the first time I have heard anybody complain about getting 100fps.

Unless you have a 120Hz display, there is really no point in going over 60fps.

But you do not want to side grade to a 560. If you really want to upgrade, wait for a 7950 sale (They have been seen in the 150-200 range recently) and pick one of those up. Sapphire or MSI TF3 units are both good.

But honestly, if you are getting those frame rates, you are fine. Unless you want more eye candy on.

1280x1024 must have been what you had on a previous monitor as it is 5:4.

BF3 to me seems to be sluggish if the minimums and averages sit damn close to 60 and drop below 60 often and rarely hit the 100 fps rate, pushing for 60fps+ minimums requires something like a 7850,running all medium and no msaa with hbao enabled and this is at 1200p being a slighter higher demanding resolution then 1080p.

Had a 7850 before, medium 1200p is what i ran to get those 60+ minimums, kill msaa and ultra most likely should be no issue at 1080p with something like a gtx660/7950 or better assuming you must have 55+ minimums and averages well above 70+.

One of the graphics settings is named "Effects", dropping it from Ultra to High will mitigate occasional brief fps drops during certain explosions. Once you've upgraded to be able to play Ultra 60 fps 1080p, of course

Make sure the settings on BF3 are not on ULTRA high, that will be a huge slow down. I cant play BF3 unless its on normal default. Game is very fast. If I put it on Ultra details I get very slow in the bus the beginning of it. Tweaking BF3 youll get higher FPS , and smooth play if you can use vsync on. gl 1280 is ugly, Try using some AA like 8x AA ...gl

A GTX 560ti would be a massive side upgrade, if you want to get something better go for at least a HD 7950 or GTX 760. I prefer the HD 7950 as it is much cheaper, but are your monitors even 120HZ? If not then like the others have said, might aswell keep the HD 6870 for another year.

if he is not using vsync, the screen refreshing at 60Hz doesn't mean that having the game at 100FPS is not going to make a difference....

imho you should just lower the details to medium or low... or get a 7950 and overclock it.

i dont know how accurate the bf3 ingame fps counter is, only updates every ~2 seconds.

i dont want 100fps, but i know that if the ingame bf3 counter says "100" it feels smooth...
now with the 6870 the enemy comes..game skips a few frames...i lie on the ground.

im already playing at low graphic details

systems:
3570K
8gb ram

A 6870 can hold about 45fps at 1080p high. It should do much better at 1080p low, but you shouldn't need to drop down that far. Medium settings will provide smooth gameplay. If you still aren't satisfied, then yes, get an HD7950. Many models are on closeout sale right now.

I have a gtx650 which is a lesser card then yours and 1200p low for me isn't to bad,i kill msaa and hbao and motion blur and some maps like Metro hold well above 60 fps often, occasional dips to the mid 40s with stuff like smoke but overall most people would conclude its very playable, your 6870 should be running hell of a lot better then my gtx650.

Could suspect you got msaa enabled or motion blur?I find both options just drag down the framerate on lesser cards and for me,they must be turned off.

Try turning vsync on and see if things get smoother. You should not be dropping frames with just a single card like that.

vsync on looks like the key factor i was missing.

bf3 plays very well on medium now, will have to test some more though.

@Stuka87: thx, i was under the impression that vsync is bad for frames...always turned it off :(

Seems sometimes in BF3 with certain cards and drivers that if you pull a high enough fps that sometimes it can introduce stutter that can only be fixed with vsync turned on.Had this issue at one point with a gtx670,vsync sorta fixed it but since i hate vsync i ended up going back to a 7850 and the issue disappeared.

Guess it is sorta driver dependent based on my experience but it seems like a common issue.
