I finally shelved WOW. After 4 years, looking for a game I can play 60-120 minutes and put down for a while.

I played BF 1942 and used the Desert Combat mod. Loved it.
Curious as to what people are saying about BF 2142.

Also, are there a lot of people online playing it?

 
I personally prefer good ol BF2 MUCH better than 2142. I'm sure others will agree. I'm downloading the point of existence mod right now, I hear it's pretty good.

Same. I can't stand 2142. Give me vanilla BF2 any day of the week.
 
BF2142 was little more than a glorified expansion to BF2, which was built on hype, and included in game spyware. And to rub salt in the wound, 2142 also included all the bugs that had previously been fixed in BF2. Go figure.

Agreed. I was hooked to BF2 for the first month after it came out, but I typically lose interest in games once they start gaining a ton of expansion packs and mods that I don't want to keep up with.
 
quakewars is much more fast-paced than BF2/2142, and it's a bit smaller scale. vehicles aren't as critical in navigation, or in combat. they still make a huge difference though, but it's not like in BF2 where a good tank crew or airplane crew is absolutely indomitable. if you want to try the quakewars beta, let me know and i might be able to hook you up with an account.

Agreed, the next thing you know the game folder size is 20GB🙁

2142 is fine if you want something to tide you over until QW is out, and you can find a favorite server that plays FF off. Lately it seems like a LOT of wussy recon players use RDX like grenades, which takes a big bite out of the tactical nature of the game.
 
2142 isn't that bad, but it isn't anything great either. It's even more of a fragfest than BF2, with walkers and gunships. I have only been playing it for a little while, but I think it's on par with BF2.

I'd stay away from both BF series and ETQW if you want to keep your sanity and want to have fun.
 
Quake Wars when its out of beta.

Its not an EA title, so naturally it wont take 9 patches after launch to get it to playable, and without very obvious exploits.
 
2142 is an amazing game. EA sucks though. Patches that screw everyone over, poor service and a habit of sliding known widespread problems under the carpet.

Hell yeah 42 is still active! Check out The Lazy Bastards 42 server. They also have BF2 and 2142, but '42 is the most active one......

And yeah, its unfortunate about the patches. They (EA) just cant seem to get it right without creating different problems. But then again, I have no clue what it takes to write a decent patch.......meh.
 
BF2142 is fun as hell. It makes no sense to say 1942 is better, because it's a different war. The only things that are the same are the engine and a lot of the gameplay. If you want WWII, play 1942. If you want mechs, motherships, and sentry turrets, play 2142.
