Battlefield 2

So I took a look at the Battlefield 2142 demo and liked the game, but there were too many bugs (menu interfact is horrible, server interface impossible, huge open spaces, completely inaccurate weapons, etc). It got me thinking I might like Battlefield 2 more. Does anyone think this would be a good game to purchase, or are there too many experienced players playing/too few players/?

Honestly those that are experienced at BF2 are probably going to be just as good at BS2142...

True, but 2142 would have a large influx of new players, meaning that while I would be getting owned by the experienced players, I could at least kick ass against the new players.

What do you mean experienced players? Just be a medic and run around rezzing people in BF2 on maps like Strike at Karkand at the front and you will end up top of the boards everytime without firing a shot.

Yeah I think BF2142 is worse in many aspects than BF2.

BF2 is often frustrating and at times a difficult game. You'll run into people who still exploit game issues, or there's just ridiculously good people in armor or air vehicles whom you have almost no effective weapons against. But overall it's an awesome game. You don't necessarily have to be a good pilot or awesome shooter to have fun and get points. Just join a squad and be whatever class is needed. It doesn't take a lot of skill per say, to revive people or repair a bunch of things, but it gets you points and gets you used to how the game works, plus you're still going to have to shoot no matter what class you are. Besides, there's tons of morons still playing the game... I doubt you could be any worse. 🙂

ok, then my question is which version of BF do I buy? There seem to be about 215 different versions released (with different mod packs).

Just buy the vanilla BF2, to see if you like it. Many people prefer the one that comes on DVD media, for the same price as the CD version, assuming you have a DVD drive. (This could be important if you don't like it and want to sell it later).

The deluxe version of BF2 comes with the Special Forces expansion pack, a $20 value for around $10 extra.

If you're interested in the older BF1942, might as well get the Complete Collection which comes with all the expansion packs EA released for $20 or less. Half the people that still play this, play the free Desert Combat mod, which is the precursor to BF2. See www.desertcombat.com (I recommend it).
After playing BF2 for some time, BF1942 feels a little old and "thin". I recommend sticking with BF2.
You will find plenty of people on-line playing both, and if you stick with it until you get the hang of it, you'll probably do OK and have fun.
