Battlefield 2

I've been thinking about buying Battlefield 2 because it's on sale at BB. I've heard mixed reports about BF2.

My system:

AMD Opteron 147 @ 2.75 Ghz
1 GB Corsair Value Memory
2x evga Geforce 7800GTs
DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR

My Drivers are 81.98 TweaksRus XG.

I tried the demo out but it didn't work. When I opened up BF2.exe it simply gave a black screen for 4-6 seconds and then back to the desktop. Does anyone know if the full version works with new 1.12 update? I intended to buy it until all these reports of problems came up. If anyone here has Battlefield 2 with a similar setup, please tell me whether it works or not.

Thanks.

I play Battlefield2 often, I never have a problem on 1.12. I have a Venice 3500, Asus A8N-E, 2GB OCZ RAM, Chaintech 7800GT using 78.01 drivers. Runs like a charm.

I had the exact same issue and I know of many people who have the exact same issue.

For me, I had to set the target in my shortcut to "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050.

I forced the resolution and it worked.

For my friends, that simply did not work. The screen just goes blank and kicks them back to the desktop.

I tried that fix since I want to run that res as well, I was one of the ones it would just not work for. Shame.

Hrmm, I wonder what the issue is then. It seems like hit or miss for everyone.

I thought that the demo needed those old drivers that came with it to run. Though they fixed that with full game and and with the patches, people have still been talking about black screens on forums. I can't return any software once it's opened, so I'll be screwed if Battlefield 2 doesn't work. Anyone else?

But i would HIGHLY advise getting 2 Gig of RAM. It is painful to wait on 1 gig of RAM. And i closed down every single program too.

The old drivers released with the demo at that time fixed a blocky shadow problem in the game. Since then the issue has been resolved. If you can stand the host of annoying problems such as random disconnects and crashes to desktop, you're in for a very fun time. The only performance problem I anticipate is that the game does need 2 GB of RAM to run smoothly; it tends to studder at the beginning (and end) of the matches even with 1 GB.

I can't even start the demo up so my hopes are not too high for the game. Do the patches solve any of the issues such as random disconnects and crashes to desktop?

Yes and no. Mine still crashes occasionally. The BF1942 legacy lives on

Yeah, it appears that lots of folks have different issues with the game. I learned that I had to close F@H or it would continue to CTD.

Is there any options you need to change in the game? I heard that by default it runs the game at 800x600@60hertz. So it messes up on some machines. I have a DP2070sb CRT.

Just buy the damn thing and stop looking for someone to hold your hand. If the game doesn't work for you then ask yourself what's wrong with your system. I never had any significant problems with this game. It's no more buggy than any other game IMO, despite all the people who like to trash it.

 He's asking a valid question. No need to jump on him.

Don't buy it. The game is being patched to cater to whiney noobies and a lot of outstanding problems with the game haven't been addressed by DICE/EA. Don't reward them by buying this game.
