Does anyone know if any Battlefield 2 servers still run? I presume there are servers still out there for 3, since you can still download 3 from Origin.

I've been playing 4 for a month or so, and it's been fun, but they screwed that game up so much that it has really just given me a nostalgic desire to play 2, which was far and away my favorite.

I don't know however Heroes & Generals has a very similar feel and pace. F2P but I have to admit not loaded with the usual pay bonuses. Unpaid isn't that much of a grind only warning is the first few levels is a boring grind but its short lived.

According to this site, there are a few that are still active, but it looks like a fair number of those are bot servers, and they're from wildly disparate geographic locations.

Anyone install 3 and 4 together? Will that work? Meh, if I'm going to try playing 3 again I could probably just ditch BF4.

Thanks, guys. I guess I can DL BF3. BF2 it's not, but it's better than 4.

I completely disagree. BF4 has Classic mode which makes it EXTREMELY similar to BF2 as far as game rules go. BF4 was an improvement over BF3 in the majority of cases.

Once Classic mode was made available, its the only BF4 mode that I play.

EDIT: You can have all the different BF's installed at the same time. I have had BC2, BF3, and BF4 all installed simultaneously.

I didn't buy BF4 after BF3; although I did play through the BF4 single player when Origin had a free weekend. As a result, I've never tried this Classic mode. What does it actually successfully mimic from BF2? Is there a map from BF2 brought in with it and does it have attackable uncaps?

I fell for the hype and bought BF4 after hearing of the classic mode. I haven't played for the better part of a year but this is what I remember:

  • No Health Regen
  • None of the 3d spotting stuff
  • SL spawn only
  • No 3rd person view
  • Reloading a mag that is not empty results in the loss of said bullets in mag

I didn't care for it or 3, and I definitely LOVED BF2 and used to admin on the Full Contact War servers back in the day. Just didn't feel like the original feel that BF2 had, I can't put my finger on it...but it's just different. Maps feel overly engineered so that everything has a weakspot, joystick support is lackluster, and bullet drop is hysterical.

Wait...BF4 has third person view? Is that for vehicles or for infantry? I seem to recall vehicles in BF2 you could go to third person but never infantry.

EA shut the servers down, but some guys called Blue Entertainment migrated over everyone's accounts to a new independent server system (I think they made some deal with EA to do this). You just have to install the Blue Entertainment "work around" system and boom, good ol classic BF2. Works with mods too. They are working on migrating 2142 right now as well IIRC.
