you know what's funny? I've got a buddy that works in EA and he's run through the beta a few times and told me he can't believe how buggy and unfinished it is and how close the ship date was.

go EA :thumbsup:

Best Buy is showing a release date for the dvd version of 6/14 and a release date for the cd version of 6/18. Not that I'd take BB's word over EA's but I wonder why the difference? Will BB have it in stores sooner maybe? I'm definitely buying it too! I'm gonna want to play it online though and there will be no servers up and running yet.

Platinum is 1 million units..

It's a software industry term.

Alpha = first running version
Beta = better version, more bugs fixed, still runs like shat
Gold = final version, all major bugs fixed, possibly a few minor bugs still being worked on, first stable release

why don't they go in order than?
Apha
Beta
Gamma

instead of Gold? Why Gold?

I ain't buying until I see what hardware it takes to run it smoothly at 1600x1200 with 4x FSAA. I'll then build my next rig around it.

gold refers to the old cdr's which were gold, so when a game went gold that meant the developers had written a cdr and it had been shipped to the factory for mass production

Well, Vietnam runs smooth @ 1680x1050 on my 6800GT/A643200 rig. BF2 will probably run at a decent framerate.

It's not really a software industry term, it's a GAMING industry term.

And since it's an EA game, the definitions are a bit different:
Alpha = first running version
Beta = better version, more bugs fixed, plenty of new bugs introduced, still runs like shat
Gold = final version, probably some major bugs, definitely a lot of minor bugs still being ignored, most recent build on the day when EA management calls up the dev group and says: "We don't give a fvck if the game is ready, we need to start bringing cash in now. We'll fix the problems later if enough people bitch and moan.

It's not specific to games, it's used throughout the software industry. :roll:

It's a far more common term in the gaming industry. Yes, I've seen it used for non-game software, but not often.

I remember when Windows XP went gold a few years ago, but it's not usual with software... probably because there's more anticipation for games rather than "OMG TEH NEW VERSION OF ACROBAT WENT GOLD!1!!11!"
