I tried starting the game up and it gives me a series of black screens.. about 2 or 3 and then exits back out to the desktop again.

I updated my Catalyst drivers to the 5.6 and the same thing is happening.

I'm running a decent system that should be able to play this game fine.

Yeah, I'm sure all these annoyances people are having will be minimal once the game comes out.

Had the exact same thing happen to me this morning...I installed 5.6 after installing BF2 and i kept getting black screen to the desktop. I later found out that the 5.6 for some reason was not installing the direct3d drivers...i couldnt play america's army either...type in dxdiag at the run command and see if direct3d is installed and make sure you have directx 9.0c.

I fixed my problem by reverting back to 5.5 drivers..reinstall the 5.5..reboot and let it sit for about 5 min..and it should work fine then..worked for me!

I'm having the EXACT same problem except I'm using an NVIDIA Geforce 4 Ti4200 128MB video card. It didn't work with my old 66 series drivers so I updated ot the latest on NVIDIAS website today and it still will not load the game...keeps crashing to desktop :(. Help please?

Actually, the game will not run on a Ti4200. The game requires an FX or higher video card because of the shaders they use. That's why it's crashing. Sorry man! I know how much it sucks to be forced into an upgrade.
NOOO!!! :disgust: There MUST be a way besides updgrading hardware to play the game :(. PLEASE someone tell me there's a special driver or SOMETHING.

I'm afraid the Ti4200 is not on the list of supported hardware for the demo (see the readme). I tried it on a Ti4200, too, with no luck.

I guess there's still a chance the full game will support older video cards, but I'm not holding my breath.

You left out the OS that you are using, what operating system do you have? Windows ____?

The ETC Function of your system is very helpful!

Bwahahahahahaha.

Apparently you didn't experience the first 6 months of BF1942. The game was incredibly buggy and had all kinds of major issues. One of the patches actually made things worse for 90% of the people. It wasn't until the 4th or 5th patch (about 6 months after initial release) that most of the issues were finally resolved.

Even so, BF1942 was my all-time favorite game and sucked away probably 15-20 hours a week for over a year of my life. So I'm hoping BF2 is more stable, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I agree, the 9800 Pro is probably the best way to make this game accessible for a reasonable amount of money. I went ahead and picked up a refurbished 6800GT from NewEgg ($210), and I'm a happy (spawn) camper, now. ;)

And back to the original question, I think the 60Hz refresh rate tip is the one to try. See Tweak Guides' BF2 Guide for this and other helpful advice.

Strange, I have a radeon 9800 pro, 3.2ghz P4 and 1GB of RAM (but JAM sounds funnier). Anyway I can play the demo fine. I'm using catalyst 5.6 too.

However the demo didn't work for me before a got my new HDD and hence a new Windows installation. Sounds like a refresh problem that you have.
