Battlefield 2 - can it support widescreen 16:9 ?

Just got BF2 installed and am playing it on my 720p HDTV. All I have for resolution options are 1024x768 and 800x600, which on those resolutions there is so much overscan that I can't view the side menu options. I must find a way to allow 16:9 or at least edit a game file that will allow custom resolutions. Ideas?

EA does not believe in widescreen resolutions and no solution yet.

I have the dell widescreen and I've seen more games lately support widescreen. Is a bit dissapointing that EA, one of the biggest publishers, is not pushing this more. But I am sure is going to be a big part of games.

If you force the resolution to your widescreen res, the game looks fine. Scopes and everything will be round and not stretched.

Only the overlay interface gets stretched as far as I can tell.

Yeah, I forced it to widescreen and it's beautiful. Shame that EA doesn't allow this though. They consider it "cheating" that you have more peripheral vision. If that's the case, I also think it would be cheating to have high end hardware that allows you to run the game at more crisp resolutions and longer view distances.

How are you forcing it? Using the +szx and +szy, I am able to play on all the ranked and punkbuster servers w/o a problem.

Yes please someone explain to this dummy how to edit or tweak it to force widescreen. Thats what I am doing on Doom3 ROE, it shows 640x480 in the menu but it really is playing at my 1152x648resolution that is the same as my desktop and looks WONDERFUL. I would love to do the same thing on Battlefield2. Thanks a ton for helping us out.

Edit the shortcut on your desktop and add:

+szx 1680 +szy 1050

With whatever resolutions you want. No matter what it says in the game, it will use this instead.

Other than the HUD distortion it crops the vertical view, in effect zooming in to give the illusion of widescreen. Personally, I would not get fixated on filling the available screen but would rather center it at the nearest resolution in the correct 4:3 AR but I suppose on smaller displays it could end up quite small so forcing it is akin to a Pan & Scan solution.

What I've seen in various forums is that you do not.

In this thread on HardOCP, a guy too k shots at various resolutions, it's clear you do not get extra FOV.
