Battlefield 2 (1.3 Patched) giving constant VPU Recovery Errors

These huge pauses keep interrupting my game. The video card "restarts" (I can hear the fan stop and then start again) and I'm left without picture or sound for about 20 seconds. Luckily, thanks to VPU Recover to whatever, it does come back. However, usually it is the 3rd or fourth time that the sound never stops but the picture never comes back... I could apparently still paly he game if I wanted, just with a black screen... When I Crtl-Alt-Del out of the game, my desktop resolution has been changed and active desktop elements are all screwed up.

What could be causing this? Is it a driver bug, or the fact that Battlefield 2 is the computer code equivilant of feces?
