Battlefield 1942 - Installs but will not run???

I have installed BF1942 on my XP1600+/KT7A/512MB/GF2 Pro/WinME/WinXP system and each and every time I launch the game it just sits there with the dark coloured 1942 logo and then eventually goes back to the desktop.

I've tried nearly everything - reinstalling Via 4 in 1's, GF drivers, DX 8.1, 8.0 and non-DMA transfers when installing the game - and lastly updating to V1.2 of the game and every time it is the same.

The only thing I can think of that "might" be causing a possible problem in what has been a very stable system is that I updated my BIOS.

I am also experiencing stutter on DVD playback too - I'm wondering if this is all connected?

I've even formatted a separate HD and put a fresh install of Win ME - the DVD playback is perfect - but still BF 1942 (as well as Operation Flashpoint) will not run :(

My other games work fine - Quake II, MOHAA etc - any ideas?

I feel your pain. I have the same problem. BF 1942 crashes to the desktop every time I try to start it. I think it's a game issue and needs to be addressed with the proper patch(s).

The weird thing is that I have installed this game on another PC (my mothers) just to test it out and it ran perfectly :(

It is a Duron 700@900/KT7/256MB/Win ME....

Go into the following directory:

\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings

Open VideoDefault with wordpad and/or notepad and change:

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0

to

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0

to

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1

Did that....and back to the desktop as usual :(

I think I might change my refresh rate manually.....anybody else use the above fix to solve their problem?

I had the same problem and I had to re-install BF1942 a couple times... making sure that every bit of the game was deleted before I re-installed and it worked the third time.

I had to do both to get it to work.
The allowAllRefreshRates 1 fix just wouldnt work until i un-installed then re-installed the game.
I have no idea why though, but it worked on my 2nd install of the game.

So try both b4 giving up.

Well I'll try that too then - I have a problem with Operation Flashpoint too if this points to some other issue with my machine - basically it installs then freezes at the options screen....Loaded my new games: Global Ops and Soldier of Fortune II without any drama and fragging away nicely as well.

Like was said above, the black screen usually occurs because you're using a refreshrate fixing program. BF1942 by default will only work at 60Hz...800x600@60Hz the first time, I think.

Once you get it running, patched, and make the change to the VideoDefault.con file you should be ok. I *think* you can use your refreshrate fix program after this, but I'm not sure since everything I've been playing uses direct3d and those refresh rates are fixed with my videocard drivers.

You need to run at 800 x 600 the first time the game is played?

Well that's a new one on me - but hey - I'll try it for what it's worth ;)

I just purchased and installed the game 2 days ago.
When I first tried to start it, I heard a beep and it went back to desktop. I don't recall seeing a BF1942 logo or anything like that though.

I patched to 1.2, and did the AllowAllRefreshRates.. and then worked like a champ.. launching from high resolutions no less.

When I load the game I can see the desktop and on top of that there is a big black rectangle (window) with the 1942 logo - cursor shows the loading icon - then before it goes into the options/game screen it just reverts to the full desktop...this is after a fairly long delay.

You shouldn't have to set your desktop to 800x600...I just meant that was the resolution that BF1942 will default to when first installed. Since it'll start at that res, you need to be sure 800x600 will run on your monitor. I'm surprised you're still having trouble...Are you running any kind of refresh rate programs, or did you manually do anything to the default refresh rates in the driver or registry?

Enable Direct 3D acceleration from within DirectX 8.1 controls if you dont have it enabled already. Also, try to use hardware acceleration for the sound card...maybe the latest patch 1.3 fixes all this stuff, i dunno...

Well I now get as far as loading the mission - it almosts gets into the game...then "click" back to the desktop!

It seems to be a very common complaint regarding this game - the problem is widely known as "CTD" or Crash to Desktop.

I'll just carry on fragging away at SoF II in the meantime.

maybe the latest patch 1.3 fixes all this stuff, i dunno...

On many BF1942 forums the feedback regarding 1.3 seems to be fairly negative :(

I'm having the same problem with the multiplayer demo. It worked perfect before I formatted. What gives?
