Yeah, this is a sensitive topic, but it kind of weird how Africans are disproportionately represented in a game set in WWI.

The weirdest addition is the German army scout is black.

Even weirder? I'm pretty sure that most soldiers in Battlefield 3 were white in MP play, and today in fact black soldiers are very much over-represented in the composition of the modern army. In fact, black and Latino soldiers are probably underrepresented in Battlefield 3, modern call of duty games, and so on.

But for some reason, DICE decided to make for a heavy and inaccurate African representation in a game set in the European theatre of WWI.

Obviously not historically accurate, what who cares. Everyone tries to include all races anymore, in everything no matter if accurate or not.

    No Asians or Latinos.

Also, I think that white men like watching black bodies get destroyed. So while they think they're being Berniebro progressive, including black soldiers in this game satisfies a racist fetish of theirs that ultimately is racist towards the African peoples.

The community has "fixed" the race problem. Just read the chat window.

Your thread title... "African" soldiers or "Black" soldiers?

Today I saw a player game review where it was basically the statement "did we really need another black protagonist?" Then a sentence about bad graphics. Kind of disgusting.

I wouldn't mind if a historical title like this stuck to the race of the soldiers in WWI, but generally it is good to recognize the disproportionate white people in media and how it's good to try to change that.

Today I would say that in media, blacks are over-represented, Hispanic/Latinos are underrepresented, whites are...I dunno, still 65-70% of the country so about right probably. Among whites there is this fetishization of black culture, in a way that does not exist for Hispanic/Latino culture, which probably explains the disproportionate representation. So yeah, DICE is expressing their own fetish here in a dehumanizing way.

Do you have any hard data about the representation - and does it account for the types of representation, e.g., are they highly criminal roles for black actors?

No. If you found any I'd be glad to see it. You need to keep in mind blacks are *only* 13 percent of the entire population. But there is a preponderance of black issues in the media.

You probably mean "overrepresentation", not "preponderance".

There's also an overrepresentation of things like black people oversentenced for crime compared to other races doing the same crime, blacks killed by police, etc. We're paying attention.

To be fair, he's German, not African. He is dark-skinned, but that hardly matters, don't you think?
