My family came here from Italy during ww2, and we all live in the south. Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida. We have no idea wtf you're talking about.

Living in the capital of the confederacy myself (Richmond, VA) but being a transplanted Yankee from Philadelphia, I find the "southern culture" phenomenon to be quaint, quirky, and mostly harmless. Nowhere else can you find quite the same atmosphere that a Charleston SC, Savannah GA, or a Monument Avenue offers in terms of charm. It's mainly benign although you still have some racists who use the concept as a way to validate their feelings and it can sometimes be a bit frustrating as it can lead to stagnation. Like when the folks try to hold onto the past just a little too hard (it's not uncommon down here to hear folks argue that a dead tree about ready to fall down and crash into someone's house shouldn't be removed because Stonewall Jackson took a piss on it or some other outlandish claim), but on the flip side it also means that most southern towns still have that antebellum feel and don't resemble a soulless moonscape of big box stores and concrete monstrosities that dominate most cities.

Yeah ok, so millions of men gave up their lives so America would be split up? I don't think so.

America is one and always will be that way. The South, pre-1965 represented murder, hate and behavior of the lowest kind. Worse than animals. In fact, they were in many ways similar to OBL and the radical Islamists.

Took brave men to hold this nation together.

As the northern liberals age and retire down south and more immigrants come in and settle in the south (as mentioned by that article), will we see a right-white flight?

WOW, you really are a racist imbecile, who knew? America was BUILT on the work of people from DOZENS of different cultures in COUNTLESS kinds of circumstances. She's not falling apart "because of diversity" in any way, shape or form. Her DIVERSITY has always been her STRENGTH, and her TOLERANCE FOR CHANGE and GROWTH has always been a key CONSEQUENCE of her principled devotion to the idea that All men are created EQUAL.

The Confederate States rising is a pipe-dream of Racists and rednecks everywhere, something you dream about in between bouts of banging your sister and socking down mayonnaise sandwiches while waiting for the next Dukes of Hazzard reunion.

As is typical of MANY southerners, your inability to distinguish between your irrational CONSERVATIVE ideology, where everyone "knows their place" and doesn't try to do anything new, different or better than those who came before them, blinds you to the real beauty of this country that the GENIUS of the Founding Fathers provided to us.

Shame on you for being a bigot not just on the basis of race but on the basis of IDEAS. You show genuine CONTEMPT for all the moral underpinnings of LIBERTY.

The south does have more of an obesity problem and have a bigger divorce problem than the north though. I doubt they rank very high in education either.

While I do LOVE Cajun food, I think I'll take the "soulless city" any day. For one thing, there is nothing soulless about a city, and a skyscraper can have an *extraordinary* amount of beauty and genius to its design. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that something of the soul of every architect who builds goes into his work, and if you look carefully you can see that in the beautiful skylines of New York or the *great* Neoclassical buildings of Philadelpha.

Now come on, be fair! Most brothers and sisters are together 'til the very end, and their three-fingered children play the banjo like nobody's business!

I'm from about as far North as you can be without being a Canadian (North Dakota) & have lived in Texas for ~15 years.

I really like the South, and don't have a big problem with the Confederate flag etc, they're all part of history, and I really dislike revisionists.

Its really funny and sad how you people stereotype southerners and then say that people from the south are bigots and racists. Please look in the mirror. Wow

I live in the South now but originally from the North and I have to say that southerners are exremely kind and very patient. Northerners could learn from that.

To say that southerners are white uneducated rednecks is just totally outrageous. Maybe before you call someone a bigot, look at what you're saying. There are many minorities in the south and people from all backgrounds.

But to be honest, the south is much slower than the north, and things seem a bit more relaxed and easy going. Some like it and some don't. I'm somewhat in the middle

You live in the state with the worst level of obesity in the nation. That doesn't mean that "the south" is a bunch of "tubs of lard" like your famliy, friends, and neighbors (relax - I'm just stereotyping - it's obviously ok with you)

Actually, the South is pretty heavily integrated, there's the occasional moron that makes a media story, but you'd be surprised...

The inner cities are another story, but that seems to be universal, North & South alike.
