bnet was working fine for me earlier this afternoon. I've heard it gets pretty laggy during peak hours, though. I can't blame 'em though, they're running servers which handles hundreds of thousands of users without charging them a dime, and I doubt the advertisements pays all of it. Can't complain about free, IMHO.

What I want to know is how you're playing Diablo 2 on a 386 w/ a 200MB hard drive. The Install is a minimum 650 megs. ;)

Actually as far as SC goes, i can complain. They shoulda put a working tcpip stack that can be used without bnet, so i can play multiplayer with my friends when bnet gets messed up. Otherwise they should make sure it can handle the load.

With cost in consideration, Battle.net is a great multiplayer service. Most of the time I get 140-150ms ping to their servers, on 56k.

I thought it didn't matter what your connection to the Bnet server was? I thought all that mattered was your connection to the other people.

Anyway, it's possible that your T1 is at fault here, because most of the time it's fine... Sure I've complained, but I'm on a 56k! I don't think I'd complain even on Cable!

What's the deal with bnet and sc lately?
I didn't play for a while and then when I started again there were only 10k players online.

I still remember when the servers were packed with 70k users constantly. It's also really hard to get a game going now with so little players. They need a new expansion pack, any word whether one is being developed?

It depends on the bnet server you get connected to. A few days ago I connected and saw 400,000 users online (compared to last year when I'd play and 40,000 users was b.net's limit) and I was damn surprised (I also just restarted playing).

For starcraft, bnet's latency only matters when trying to find a game. For Diablo II, bnet actually hosts the game (to ensure the game is cheat-free), so bnet's lag matters much more.

SC2? I thought they didn't even start on that yet since they're busy working on warcraft 3... I can't wait!

It might be my T1's fault, but I just tested using the MSN speed test and I got 1200.7 Kbps, so I think my T1 is pretty fast!

You haven't seen bad multiplayer until you've played ST: Armada online or Tiberian Sun... now THAT's laggy

For some reason I desire SC2 more than WC3, I love futuristic things I guess!

Do any of you know what kinda 'puter battle.net uses as servers? I hope they are not 486s.

rhinox i agree about armada online. But armada on my machine is so buggy anyway. I swear it was the worse program i have ever seen written at v1.0. The sound alone is wack. It sounds like someone is talking through a cell phone that has been dropped in water. (i dont know what that relly sounds like but what the hell)

And I have not played scraft in about 1.5 years, boy those were the days.

and by the way i get anywhere from 3200kbps up on that site, but downloading starcraft maps sucks on this lan for some reason. I have downloaded stuff at 7mbps off of other parts of the schools system but a fricken map takes longer than a lot of things i download.

It's suckin' as we speak. My friend and I were in, but we couldn't see each other, get a game started worth anything. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

Your sucky download speed of maps is probably because the game host is on something like a 56k ;)

i hope that is the case, BTW, my roommate can get on bnet and most of the time we can see each other but cannot see what the other is saying, and it sometimes will not let us dl the same map in the same game. I think its something to do with the bandwidth, but who knows. Its still better than my 56k at home by a slight margin...

The reason why two people aren't able to see each other is because b.net has different servers that you connect to. I know there's exodus, telia, at&t, etc. Therefore if you're connected to exodus and your friend is connected to telia, you could be in the same channel but you won't see each other.

prodigy: back in the old days, the servers were interconnected like IRC so that users on one would be able to interact with those on another. However, netsplits are common on b.net now so rarely is this possible anymore.
