hey, like 4-6 years ago when me and my little brother used to play starcraft, we could never play together in the same server, using Comcast cable.

and then when we tried playing a game of dota, or any warcraft 3 game for that matter, it lags us out.

specifics:
we can play in US.East azeroth in different games without lag.
we obviously have 2 different cd keys.
i have comcast highspeed cable.
i have a netgear wireless B router
both comptuers are hooked up via ethernet cables
we lag like 5 seconds every 6 seconds in the b.net games

Solution?
YOU TELL ME PLease!!

is there a way i can play with him wihtout lagging?

this brings up another question, i think we can't join the same counter strike servers too?
anyhelp?

I'm not sure about WC3, but I've played with my roommates on the same servers in CS:S. We all had different Steam accounts, but we didn't have to change any settings to play on the same server.

I never had any problems back in like 96 or 97 playing Diablo 2 over battle net. Sometimes with LANs there would be 4 of us all playing on bnet at the same time from one IP addy. I'm not sure what the cause of your problem is, but you should be able to connect multiple people on one IP to battlenet. I haven't used battle net since about 1998 or 1999 though, so perhaps they changed something since then? It doesn't seem logical that they would change something like that, but you never know.

Starcraft I know you need 2 IPs. Warcraft 3, you need to change the ports. It's under Options > Game Play if I remember correctly. 6112 is the default, make it something else like Madeline suggested.

I never said dorm room. We lived in an apartment and we shared the same wireless router. We would usually have three or four people playing through the router on the same server. Perhaps CS is different but CS:S worked perfectly fine for us. The only time that I got the "steam ticket expired" error was when my roommate was using my account to play online.

This was about a year ago though, so I suppose Valve could have updated their software so that people can't do this anymore.

Starcraft can't do this, I've tried. Most games you just have to change the default port on one of the systems and it works fine. Lagging out happens when you don't do this.

You set the ports in the options in game and in the port forwarding/virtual server area of your router. Assign say 6001 to your IP and 6002 to his then reboot everything at once.

i posted on bnet technical support.

i tried EVERythign i was cussing my head off too but i cant get it to work

a true pitty.

From http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=awr0655p :
1. Make sure you have the latest updates installed from your Router manufacturer.
2. Configure the Game Port Warcraft III will use on each computer:

1. Start Warcraft III on each computer
2. Click Options
3. Click Gameplay
4. Approximately half way down the screen you will see Game Port, each of your computers will need to use a different port
Example: Computer #1 can use port 6112, computer #2 can use port 6113, computer #3 can use port 6114, and so on.

3. Configure your Router to forward the incoming data for port x to the computer where you setup Warcraft III to use that port
For more information on configuring your router, please contact your router manufacturer.
4. Try playing the game

I had two 2k pcs and 1 xp on a lan. wanted them all on bnet but could never get all 3 on at the same time. Any combination of two but never three.

Two should be OK! Are you SURE you set up port forwarding correctly?

How? AFAIK that game doesn't have any options to change the port it uses. I'd really like to figure this out!

Perhaps there's an appropriate key in the registry.

Not really a fix. But this is how we play. I unplug my computer from the router. Since I have dsl, the phone company provides a dial-up number if you're traveling. I use that on mine and everything runs just fine.
