To upgrade your units you must first purchase the upgrades from the appropriate buildings. After the upgrades have been bought individual squads will need to be upgraded. To do this:
Click on the Squad you wish to upgrade
Click on the Upgrade you wish to purchase, these upgrades will be located next to the squads little doohickey
You must be able to afford the second purchase as well.
Once a Squad has been upgraded its appears will change to reflect the upgrade. This may include glowing weapons or banners
