They work for about 60-90 seconds. They are used by some places to replace UPS batteries to carry the load until the backup Generator(s) come on.
What if I make one with a two ton rotor?

Sure if you want a two ton rotor spinning at thousands of RPM's right near your house......
The point is that the utilities are going to cripple net metering eventually, if they aren't already in the process to do so. Solar is pretty much dead when that happens since the cost savings would be minimal. Unless you have a battery to store the extra output of course.
Yes. Yes I do.Sure if you want a two ton rotor spinning at thousands of RPM's right near your house......
Yep I see it happening. And no matter what, they arn't going to pay you as much as what it cost you to buy from them. otherwise everyone would be going solar and the utility companies would go out of business.
Best bet is to use what you produce, only sell excess. That means storing as much as you can realisticly store. You can also store in form of heat. You need to heat your house anyway so if you can offset the gas bill with heat you generate yourself then that makes more sense then selling back to the grid only to buy more from the gas company instead.
In fact, entire countries screw up this concept. They mine resources, sell them all to other countries then buy it back at 3x the price. It's completely retarded.
Now, let's entertain for a moment that you were right - they buy it back for less. In that case, then there would come a time when the investment in a bank of batteries breaks even. That time is still likely to be beyond the lifespan of your batteries. Remember, even if they pay you for your excess 90% of what they charge you when they're supplying you, you're not coming out ahead, because you're likely to only get back 90% of your excess via storage due to it being physically impossible to have 100% efficiency.
