So thanks to my generic Ipod fiasco (which can also be found on ATOT) I'm looking to replace the battery. However, the battery I have now says

capacity: 250mAh
Voltage: 3.7V
(4.2V) (+) ----- whatever that line is supposed to be

I see some on ebay at 3.7V but differ from 400mAh to 330mAh and others. What ones would be safe for me? Can I go larger than 250mAh...smaller?

Thanks

higher mAh is good as long as it will fit (physical dimensions)

don't go smaller

mAh rating is how long it will last, how long it will power your device

ahh...you the man FoBoT. So I might as well get a 400mAh battery as long is the size is same and it's 3.7V.

Thanks!

What FoBoT said. mAh is basically the charge capacity of the battery, so higher is better and it'll power your device longer. But you've also gotta keep in mind that a higher capacity could mean larger physical dimensions of the battery, so make sure it'll fit.

I have no idea what the 4.2V is.

3 1.2V nimh batteries in series will do, 250 mah is easy to achieve, even exceed, with just AAAs. So maybe solder 3 AAAs in series? Would they fit? I don't have an ipod so I don't know how small it need be. I soldered a couple of AAs together once for an electric shaver and it works great to this day. Like Fobot said you can go larger on the mah rating but not smaller. And size is important for it to fit inside the device.
