Battery problem on XP

Got a Compaq Presario from a friend, works good but now the battery icon has an X over it and it says 0% remaining although the machine is working on a charge still.

Does this indicate a bad battery or motherboard problem, or could it be an OS issue. Its XP.

Thanks in advance for any advice about this.
