Battery issue with a PowerBook G4

A friend of mine has a PowerBook G4 Titanium that operates perfectly whilst plugged in. However, the laptop does not acknowledge/register that a battery is installed. This has been confirmed with two functional batteries that both operate fine in other PowerBook G4s. Any ideas what the deal might be? Thanks in advance!
