Rechargeable NIMH

You can find some cheap ones on ebay. The offbrand ones work great, they may not last as long but they are much cheaper. The battery for my camera was a few bucks and works well enough to keep around.

go to thomas distributing and you have great batteries at a great price with great customer service.

I have a Canon PowerShot A300 and the manual recommend using Canon-branded NiHM. I guess thats not a requirement? Any brand of NiHM would do? Also, I need a special charger for it too? I can't use regular AA charger?

They also probably recommend genuine Canon Accessories like tripods, carrying cases, carrying straps, etc. They just want more of your money.
Just buy one of the combo sets here and be done with it.

Check the selection over for price and capacity.

The combos here and here look alright after a quick check.

Seconded.
Don't skimp on the charger, it plays a greater role in the battery life than the batteries itself.
imaging-resource tested just about all the chargers out there and found that a good deal of the cheap ones had trouble charging above 50% capacity!

after several years of using rechargeable NiMH's I must admit that the Radio Shack ones have lasted longest and hold a charge longer than any of the other brands I have bought.
(and I'm not a radio shack fan)

That's where I got my $100+ worth of Maha NiMHs! AAA, AA, and V9, along w/ AA/AAA and V9 Maha chargers.
