Battery/Cursor problem

The battery on my laptop no longer works (does not hold a charge). Lately, while in windows, the cursor will skip every few seconds, and it's quite annoying. It only does this when the battery light is flashing. Any way to disable the battery from trying to recharge itself? (I'm thinking this is my problem), and I dont want to spend 70 bucks on a new battery to solve this problem.
