What exactly causes battery corrosion, how harmful is it, and anyone have interesting information or sites on it?

So I'm the only one who misplaces a remote control behind a couch for 5 years and finds its batteries half corroded? Alrighty then

I was able to pull this up on the net:

Very thin aqueous films (on the order of tens of angstroms) can form on metals at less than 100 percent relative humidity, and these films can be quite corrosive, especially if the solution is contaminated with atmospheric pollutants or particulates.

I guess once the outside corrodes, it allows the inner cell to release, which causes the bulk of the mess.

most of the corrosion is because the chemicals inside eat thru the case.

the outside metal case is one of the battery electrodes, BTW...

Todays' 'Dry cells' have a gel electrolyte & are not dry inside, just not a liquid like an auto battery...

Batteries run off of corrosion, by the way. It's only natural that it gets out of hand sometimes!

I'm taking the materials science "Corrosion" course here at Berkeley... not fun at all.
