Battery changes causes car to "shudder"

Well, my car had trouble starting in the morning...took about 4 tries to get it going. I needed an oil change so I went to the mechanic right away. Seems my battery was on the brink of dying so he threw a new one in there (for no charge since my old one was under warrenty).

Anyway, I was driving home and whenever I stop at a red, the car now shudders. The rpm flucutate between 500 to 750 or so, causing a shuddering.

Any ideas?

check the battery terminals. Other than that, I don't think it's a battery issue.

Possibility that it wasn't your battery in the first place?

Idle control valve is often the culprit for an unsteady idle or inability to idle.

I'm sure it's the battery. The car was running just fine yesterday and even running fine smoothly when I got it turned on in the morning. First red light I hit after the mechanic, I get shudders. No way it's a coincidence.

Well, if you are sure it's related to the battery, since you've had that replaced, it could be the alternator. Did they test your charging system as well?

Perhaps your computer simply needs to relearn it's idle control? Some vehicles have an idle relearn period or even a procedure when the battery is disconnected.

The procedure is usually to turn off all accessories and let the car idle for a couple minutes when you reconnect the battery.

this may be it because i drove off IMMEDIATELY after the battery was installed. I was in a huge rush and even paid before hand so I was literally in the driver seat as he was fastening the screws.

I had a '91 Eclipse, and the computer definitely had to relearn its idle control after a battery change/discharge. It would idle very low for an hour or two afterward, then be fine.

rough idle is the problem, you need to do the idle learn procedure for your car

If your car is new enough it probably has adaptive strategy. This means that the strategy adjusts as the electronics in your vehicle age, to a point of course. Adaptive Strategy usually includes idle control, throttle position sensor, HEGO sensors and possibly others. When the battery is removed the Keep Alive Memory which includes the adaptive strategy tables gets reset. If this is your problem, normal driving over a few days will correct it. If it does not correct itself after a few days of normal use, then the problem is probably not related to the new battery. Give it a couple of days.

all hoses seem to be ok

You checked all of the hoses in 6 minutes?

You assuming he didn't check before the guy suggested it?
