Im now on my 2nd APC BX900... The first one had a dead port, this new one has a noisy fan that runs constantly.. Sounds like a groaning animal..... Freaking annoying...
I have a BX1000 (my first), which I have had for about 6 months or so, and I have never heard a squawk from it, except when it is running a self test. I suspect that your's is defective.
EDIT: Reading DaveSimmons post, I don't even know if I have fans or not.

From what I've read, APC has good tech support. Maybe you should talk to them. If the second APC is the same as the first, and it was quieter, then something is wrong.
Like I said, if the first one was quieter, I wouldn't settle for less. Assuming that BB is BestBuy, they should be accustomed to dealing with such problems.
I wonder if it's because you're running it before allowing it to charge first? The manual might say not to. Also check the status LEDs to make sure they're showing OK.
Status LED's show ok, i didnt notice the groaning until just a few days ago...
Just checked the receipt, since i had to swap it out before, i didnt realize its already been 31 days since i bought it, not gonna have any luck with BB then....
On a side note, i checked APC.com, and it shows for a simular model:
Audible noise at 1 meter from surface of unit
45 dBA
I didn't even know that model had a fan. My RS 1000 (a step up from the BX series) doesn't have a fan (though it has a place for one). Most UPS's that have fans only run them when they are charging or on battery. If it's running constantly something may be wrong with it. BTW APC usually has very good tech support.
Those fans are to cool the inverter heatsink which only is in use when running on battery power. If the fan is on all the time you unit is probably defective.
Generally the fan will run while charging at a high rate and when running a system off the battery. You can always replace the fan with a better one - pretty sure they aren't spending much on the ones they put in there. Or you can just ask APC to send you a replacement on a cross-ship basis - hold the phone up to it for proof .. .
I just had a similar problem with a case fan. Your unit may be "defective": I would HEAVILY asterisk that word though. It could be that the fan bearing is just poorly lubed.
