I read some of the other backup posts and decided that I really do not need the monitor hooked up to the battery. I guess I just don?t understand the joules and 1200va (or 670watts). What exactly are these referring to? I understand that the joules have to do with surge protection, but what is a minimum level of protection? What about ones with line filters or conditioners - how necessary are they?

Thanks for the help

you don't really need to worry about any of that stuff.. mainly battery backups should be used to save files and shutdown correctly... which takes all of 3 minutes... which means any backup on the market will work fine

as far as surge protection/conditioned/etc the battery backup naturally acts as a surge protector
