Batteries for Wii-motes

I am giving a Wii to my kids for Christmas. What is the optimal way to handle batteries for the Wii-motes? I hear they go through batteries pretty quickly.

I have seen the recharger station for them to sit in when they are not in use. Or is a better idea just keeping standard AA rechargable batteries? What do you guys use?

I'd like to know what people have found as well, I rarely used my Wii prior to Galaxy coming out and the batteries just didn't last long at all.

I use the monoprice.com wii charger for 2, and standard NiMH for the other two. I haven't had any marathon gaming sessions, but for the usage pattern of an hour or two every few days, it does not seem like I change batteries very often.

I've got a pile of 2700mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries. Usually I don't use more than one or two wiimotes at a time so I can keep a extra set of 4 on the charger if they happen to run out. They usually last quite awhile for me.

I have an Energizer Duo charger that charges two AA/AAA batteries via USB - so I just use that in conjunction with standard rechargeable batteries. Works great and I've never felt I go through batteries too fast. Also nice since my 360 controllers, TV remotes, small flashlights, MP3 player, all use standard batteries. Why people invest in proprietary batteries confuses me.

I had 4 2600mAh rechargeables that worked fine for two wiimotes and recently I got 8 more for like 12.99 at circuit city. I think i'm set.

Loved them in my digital camera, so also using them on my Wiimotes - Sanyo Eneloops.

I'm using the Nyko Wii Remote Charger, which charges 2 at the same time. It lasts for the 1-2 hours that I play at the most, and I've never had it fail on me. However, there are some people online who've had Nyko batteries die prematurely for them.

I bought a NiMH charger and batteries basically for Wiimotes and my digicam and have been pretty pleased. It seems like I'm replacing batteries in the Wiimote after about 15 hours of play time so I'm sure they pay for themselves pretty quickly. Plus the environmental benefits, fewer batteries being dumped in landfills.

Just look for the standard ~2500mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries. Find some that come with a charger and then you can always buy additional packs of stand alone batteries should you find you need more.

They work just as well if not better than proprietary batteries/packs and you can use them in various devices other devices other than the wiimote. Might even want to look into one of the fancier 15 minute chargers, some even come with car adapters which is a big plus for road trips and using any devices that still use AAs or AAAs (unfortunately more and more devices are getting their own proprietary battery packs and or the batteries are f***ing built into the unit)

I use eneloops in mine. And have a spare set for if they should run out. They match to boot :) I did this mainly because I wouldn't be using the wii on a daily basis.. the slow drain effect of the eneloops fit perfectly for me.

Same here.. I got one of these packs for the Wii and 360. Amazon is about 10-12 bucks high on the price though. You can get the same kit on ebay or at costco for $23-24.. Well worth it IMO. I have since upgraded to a smart charger, and bought 4-5 more packs of AA, AAA for the other random toys/remotes running around my house.

I got this and have never looked back:

Nyko Wii Charge Station

It comes with the replacement batteries (of course), but I think it's important to note that the batteries have a rubber backing that is a nice fit and adds grip to the Wii-mote. Also, it designed well enough that it actually looks like an official Nintendo device.

Same here but I also have the Nyko Wireless Sensor Bar and it eats batteries like no other.

Two problems I've had with my two Nyko cradles/four packs. One battery only charges to 50% and one of my two charging cradles died three weeks in with light use...and the Wiimote doesn't fit in the Wii Zapper with the backplate on. Ultimately, I think I'm going to go rechargeable AAs.
