I went to my local Target earlier this evening to pick up a few necessities and while browsing the electronics / video games I saw they had Batman : Arkham City for PC on the shelf.

It was $49.99 and they only had one copy left.

The supposed release date has been bumped to I believe 11/22/2011 now.

Does anyone think this game will unlock if purchased early?

This may or may not be a mistake by the retailer since the console releases have been out a few weeks now.

It tells me the PC version has probably been ready for a while, possibly at the same time as the consoles, but that they purposefully withhold it for sales / pirating reasons.

Since it is steam, I don't think it will unlock even if you have the DVD.

Is Batman: AC really a Steamworks game?

If so, then yeah, you're correct. Despite retailers putting it on shelves early you'll still have to wait until Steam officially unlocks the game.

I'm pretty sure the retail version doesn't use steam.

I did some quick googling, it looks like it's actually NOT using Steamworks. So OP might in fact be able to play the game early.

It uses GFWL instead, like Arkham Asylum did. (Cue the GFWL hate...)

The Steam version actually has GFWL, SecuROM, AND Steamworks.

Games for Windows Live.

Some people loathe it, others are indifferent. Nobody actually likes this service.
Yeah, I know that. It's what I meant...GFWL made me hate Asylum. I had to update the Client like 6 times, and by that point, I had no desire to play the game anymore.

OK, I just came back from my local Super target, and they do have the game in stock and on the shelves as the OP said.

However, they won't sell it! I just tried to buy it, but the register prevented the clerk from selling it to me. She even showed me the screen, and it said the game releases on the 22nd, so the purchase could not go through :'(

That sucks, because I have the entire weekend off and I was hoping to play the game..

Wow I would have thrown a fit over that. What I can purchase this milk, but not Batman? WTF has this store come to!

If the game comes out next week its reasonable to already have it in the stores. Its not like the master, package, then ship to stores the day before release. Someone put it out early is all.

The Steam version actually has GFWL, SecuROM, AND Steamworks.

Not that big of a deal, the AA version on Steam is the same way.

GFWL is just a little overlay like the Steam overlay, but achievements count toward your 360 gamerscore, and you can chat with friends playing on the 360... I actually like that. Basically just a little Xbox Live overlay.

Securom gave me some problems in the past, but nothing major... just an annoyance because it is there, more then an annoyance because it messes something up.

Arkham Asylum did not have Steamworks. Also, while you and I had no problems with GFWL, that was not the case for everyone. Just searching this forum alone will bring up multiple examples.

I don't understand... They had it for sale on the shelf but wouldn't sell it to you?

Yup, register said not to sell it. Weird thing is that all the new releases were in protective cases but Batman wasn't.

GFWL raped my mother and killed my father....

And then bragged about it on my Xbox Live account. :'(

Should finally be out tomorrow. Hope its not buggy and the delays were for good reasons. This has been my most anticipated game of the year.
