Bathroom Renovation. . .

We decided to gut and renovate the bathrooms in our house. The house is twenty years old, and the bathrooms appear to be the original. The main bath is 95% done. I'm just waiting on the granite to be cut so we can install it on top of the vanity.
In the meantime, I figure I'll pop in a new exhaust fan. The old one is nasty, dusty, crusty, and a heath hazard. So I pull out the old one and I see this and this. Am I seeing things, or did some dolt stick an exhaust fan in the ceiling 20 years ago without ever venting it anywhere? There you can see the fan housing, but it doesn't lead to anywhere. Nary a hole or opening or exhaust of any kind. WTF? Who built this house, and what were they thinking? Can't wait to see what surprises I'll find in the other bathroom.

Exactly. Nowhere! It's actually comical. I can see some tired worker 20 years ago, in the south Florida heat, tell his co-worker buddy, "Eff it. Shove this fan up here and let's knock off early today!" Does make me wonder what other surpises are behind the walls??

My bosses house was an electrical nightmare. The builder used duct tape to hold splices together, no wire nuts, and in a number of spots didn't have enough wire ,so he strung multiple pieces together.

AHHHHAHAHAHAAHAA...the builders forgot to hook a vent up :) That's why it's important to inspect the whole house before purchasing, especially on a new construction. Man, when my house gets done I'm going to be going over it with a fine tooth comb before signing off on it. That's a pretty funny screw up though :)

Haa, can relate to the south, fl thing i live in dade co. Miami dade county had the worst building codes until hurricane andrew. Also the laborers here are somewhat shady.

Yeah, it's pretty scary to think what might lie beyond those ol' walls and ceilings. Truth is, most houses these days are pretty shabbily built. Most builders are into speed: get it done, collect your profits, and move on. They have mastered the art of making a house look good, but the quality of the construction leaves much to be desired. Cutting corners the way they do has reached the level of artistry. I think we are probably better off not knowing. . .

My house (15 years old now) had two bathroom fans that only vented into the attic. We found out about it when we went into the attic and the entire inside of the roof was covered in mold. So we had to spray down all the mold with bleach, and then install venting for the fans. Idiot contractors.

Ok yes after looking at the pics your situation is worse. :p

No one forgot anything. That was a Friday afternoon special.

True, but it wasn't new construction. I bought the house six years ago, and had an inspection done, of course. But who inspects exhaust fans? (Although we all will now. . .hehe).

Somewhat shady? That's the mother of all understatements! Crooks from other parts of the country come down here and enroll in classes.

Actually, they do have vents but they are covered by flaps. Usually circle shaped and not directly behind the fan but on the sides. I can kinda see it on the bottom left hand side in this pic Here.

By no means am I the last word on home improvement projects. So, can I just pull that housing out of the ceiling? How is it being held in place? I'd like to see what's behind it so I know what the fix up will be.

MAYBE, it was originally just a ceiling light. The owner (or probably the owner's wife) was at the store and said, "hey, that's what I need - an exhaust fan!" Fan was purchased, owner was idiot and stuck it up there.

I've purchased a few exhaust fans, and I've purchased a few simple recessed light kits like that. I have yet to run across an exhaust fan *that doesn't already have a place to attach the vent hose to.*

Umm... I think you are in the wrong thread, I think you need to be here.

lmao, I had to do a search. I was just thinking a second ago, "where the hell did my post go?!"

(ooops, posted this in another thread)

Mine looks just like that but it's hinged and has a tube behind the flap. If this one doesn't, then I bet it was one stinky a$$ bathroom. :)
