Bateluer's crappy day

Alright, so I had to be in work early today to prep for a meeting of EVPs and GMs. That wasn't so bad, most of them are pretty cool people, plus I got to hang out for a portion of their presentations to ensure the IT equipment worked(they knew how to use it). Always interesting to get political perspectives from the CEO, VPs, and GMs of the company.

The shittiness happened afterward. The IT equipment worked fine and they had no problems using it. After that, I had to run cat 5 on a floor in preparation for a future deployment of IP phones. Not so bad, we had a good crew and the employees on that floor were relocated to other sections of the floor that we weren't cabling today.

Then, I began getting chalk from the fake ceiling tiles in my eyes, aggravating the usual dryness from my LASIK last year. Yes, I still need to use the artificial tears occasionally, especially when the weather is cold. With the eye irritation, came the head aches.

After we wrapped up the day's cabling, I departed and drove about two blocks before some odd floppy noises from outside my car made me pull into a parking lot. Yippee, flat tire. I knew it was getting soft, seems to be a perennial problem with my Corolla, and I intended to take it to Discount Tire, who replaced the tires and have done all my tire work in the past. Now, I don't carry cash and I prefer to leave my plastic at home, otherwise I end up spending the money on fast food on the way home, a massive interference when one is training for marathons.

So there I am in a parking lot of a Food City with a flat tire. Its 50 degrees and beginning to rain. Sound fun yet? It gets better. I removed the flat and put on the donut, but as soon as the weight of the car was let down, it was immediately apparent that the donut was flat as well. No cash, no plastic, and two flat tires. Lousy situation. Fortunately for me, I had a can of fix'a'flat in the glove box. Yes, I know its a poor solution and temporary at best, but it was all I had.

The can 'inflated' the tire enough for me to drive home, but once I got home, the tire was nearly flat again. With the nearest Discount Tire a 7 mile drive, that option was out. Walmart was close, but further that I wanted to drive on a flat tire.

Luckily, there is a Goodyear Tire right next door to my apartment complex. Turns out the was a crack/slash/gash in the side wall of the tire, unrepairable. So I got to buy a new tire. Yippee. While there, I mentioned that my oil change a week ago reported that my brake fluid was low and if they could top it off without charge. They said agreed, but came back with bad news afterward, stating that my front brakes were 95% gone. They gave me an estimate for replacement of 182 with a ten dollar discount for a total of 172, to replace the front pads with ceramic pads. 66 for the pads, 97 for the labor. The manager I spoke with stated they could do it for around 130 with cheaper, lower quality pads. I have no idea brake pad replacement should cost. And no, I'm not willing to do it myself. So I'll be making some phone calls this week.

Looks like 1) the new gaming notebook I wanted will be postponed a few more months and 2)my holiday gifts to my self will consist mostly of auto repairs. If I didn't have to run in a 30K this sunday, I'd pick up a bottle of Chivas and get trashed.

Cliffs:
Eye irritation from chalk dust
Headache
Two flats in cold rain
Cost of a new tire
Learned front brakes about shot, will cost more money
Still have a headache, want liquor

You could replace the pads yourself for $30 (about the price of the "Gold" line at Autozone (lol)). Also, you should've just boarded the bus with the tire in question and had them change it then bring it back (if you really wanted to go to Discount Tire)... I would've got a good laugh out of that.

EDIT: If I remember correctly though, replacing brake pads is fairly straight-forward... the only annoying part is pushing the piston back to let the new pads fit properly (as your pads wear, the piston stays in further and further to make up for the lower amount of pad... so you have to push it back to the default position).

Mmmm... sweet misery, so yummy. At least you weren't born in a 3rd world country.

I'm not doing it myself. Likely, I could, but I hate working on my car. Absolutely hate it. To the point where it might be preferable to work an 8 hour shift at McDonald's again. Not only is it dirty, its also cold and wet outside right now, and it won't be warm again until March.

I've had decent work done at Discount Tire, and their warranty is solid. Shortly after I bought my car in 2003, I suffered several punctures to my tires from tools left in the street from contractors on the AF base. I had Discount Tire replace all four tires, and about 3 months later, I suffered another 'fatal' impact and had to have another tire replaced. I showed up at the DT, explained the situation, they called up my information from the DB, and 30 minutes later, I was leaving with a shiny new tire.

I'm still going to get some quotes for the brake replacement, but odds are, I'll probably go to the Goodyear Tire next door because I can drop my car off then walk about 50 feet back to my apartment and relax until its finished.

Oh, you never did explain how I was going to run the bus without any money. Somehow, I don't think the 3 cents I had in my center console would be enough. :p

30K is only 18 miles, and it took me about 3 hours last year. Its 20 miles to work, one way. I burn a tank of gas a day going to and from work. :(

I'm tired - though granted I'm not as tired/having as bad a day as you are so I could just be an idiot and reading this wrong- but how do you burn a tank of gas a day if you're work is 20 miles away?

Eh, I don't like getting dirty (it's a bitch cleaning that shit out of your nails), so I usually wear latex gloves when I work on a car. But I don't touch my current car... mostly because of trying to have some idea of preserving the resale value (leaving it to the dealer so I can say a reputable organization did all the work). But the brakes are fairly easy to do and mostly rely on you jacking up the car, putting that side on a stand, removing the tire, removing the caliper, removing the brake pads/clips, push the piston(s) back, put the clip and new pads on, put the caliper back on, tighten the bolts to spec, put the wheel back on. That's really it (unless I forgot something in which someone can mock my lack of knowledge :p).

Yeah, it's one of those things a non-mechanic can actually do.

Err, a week I meant. 20 mils there, 20 miles back, 40 total.

I was all "wut???" reading this thread.

1) I have a Corolla, and it's about 40-50 mile round trip every day. I don't go through a whole tank of gas every day -- it's always been one fill-up per week (11 gal tank).

2) I'd have to check the registration, but mine's either a 2003 or 2004 (they all look the same to me). I had the stock tires replaced with Michelins a few years back, and that's been the only tire change on it. You seem to go through an awful lot of tires ...

You had me onboard the pity party until here. You consider the topper to a bad day as you not being able to buy a gaming laptop? You buy gifts for YOURSELF for the holidays? That's a new level of stupid that I'm hardly prepared to handle.

I determined that it was your own fault as soon as I read that you had no money on your person due to the fact that you have problems controlling yourself.

Learn self control so you can take your plastic with you for emergencies and not blow it on McRibs.
