1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

10. Don't ask for a build configuration critique or rating if you are thin skinned.

1. Gaming, movies, internet, rendering (don't stress this point though)

2. Initial budget... $1000 canadian, based on what I am looking for I think I will have to bump up the budget since I am going for mid-high end (only need mobo, ram, ssd, case, video card, sound card)

3. Canada

4. Have often used nVidia, Asus, and Intel.. want Lian Li case O_O

5. Will reuse hard drives for storage (Seagate 7200.12 1TB)

6. nope... have built machines myself and picked parts many times before... just have not really been following current trends so don't know whats good/bad these days

7. I can overclock

8. 1920x1200

9. Early January

10. ok 🙂

All I really know these days (confirm or deny please):
Intel 2500K CPU is best bang for buck
Intel SSD is better than other brands

Is the major 2011 thread still useful information?
Bang for buck video card, motherboard, ram, ssd, sound card?

For sound... I run using a home theatre reciever. Currently use Audigy2 via Coaxial Digital connection... I guess I would be looking at getting DD Live

You don't need CPU? What about power supply, are you reusing that?

Intel 2500K CPU is best bang for buck
Yes.

Intel SSD is better than other brands
No. Intel SSD's are great but also cost alot. Crucial M4 is cheaper yet performs about the same and is just as reliable. And yet other brands offer more cost effective variants, e.g. OCZ Agility can sometimes drop near the 1 USD/GB mark.

9. Early January
I would expect pricing of specific components to be a bit different early January. But in general:

Mobo LGA1155 Z68 e.g. Asus P8Z68-V LE, Asrock Z68 Extreme3, Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3, among others
RAM 2x4GB DDR3 1600MHz 1.5V (unless 1333MHz happens to be a lot cheaper)
SSD 64GB / 128GB
CPU i5-2500K
GPU 6950 2GB or wait for 7000 series
Case Why Lian Li? I don't think they're particularly good bang for buck.
PSU 500-750W depending on your choice of GPU and single/dual (Antec, XFX, Seasonic, Corsair, some units from other brands too)
Sound Asus Xonar series card

Lehtv's list is probably about as specific as we can get this far out. A week or so prior, we can get into the nitty-gritty of specific pricing on parts, etc.

Oh sorry, definitely need a CPU and PSU.. I have OCZ Fatality 500w... which I am not too fond of

Lian Li is a want rather than a need...

Reliability is a top concern for sure

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I will start looking more carefully!

Do I really need a sound card... I've been using my Audigy2 only because I seem to have noise off my onboard..

I run 2.1 with an external reciever.. so using Digital PCM the reciever just creates the ".1" for the sub based off the L/R. Since I am just 2.1, I guess DD Live isn't necessary and I can see if onboard will suffice...

If you're using S/PDIF, then no you don't need a sound card. The onboard is perfectly good for producing a digital signal.

A log for myself:

CPU - Intel 2500K
Mobo - ASUS P8Z68-V (or LE)
SSD - 128GB (Crucial or Intel).. How reliable are the OCZ?
Sound card - later if necessary
Case - Lian Li (need to measure desk to see whether full towers fit)
GPU - probably wait for the 7000's (what expected price point?)

Do I need to worry about the 4 slot filled memory problem?

I notice its much cheaper to get two sets of 2x4 for RAM than to get 2x8

What CPU cooler is good to get for this socket? Is the stock cooler adequate for minor overclock

Need cool and decent quiet

Have ocZ vendetta now... Don't like pushpins

My Motherboard seems to bend even with stock cooler

Do most power supplies come with cables long enough for use in full towers (w/ psu at bottom)?

I am between two Lian-Li cases right now 😉 Full tower will barely fit my cabinet, has maybe 20mm of free space depending on the case... is this too little space for top fans to work?

Thank you for your help Mr. Yamamoto again 🙂

No, I don't see why you should get a SATA II SSD. Crucial M4 or Samsung 830 is the way to go. If you can't afford the 128GB one now then get 64GB or save up cash.

I would not say most power supplies have long enough cables for a full tower... At least if you want to route the CPU cable behind the mobo 😉. Corsair HX series have a 65cm CPU cable. I think that'd be long enough for any full tower (e.g. HAF X is 59cm tall) but you may find similar cable length in more affordable PSUs as well.

The cables on that one are 580mm, probably not long enough to route the CPU cable behind the mobo in a full tower.

edit: should probably go with Corsair HX to be safe if you buy a full tower, unless someone else can find a decent PSU that has long cables like that. OCZ ZT750 has 600mm EPS cable, XFX 750W has 620mm (according to jonnyguru reviews), could still possibly run into problems with a full tower

Purchased:

Intel 2500K
Asus P8Z68V LE
Kingston (4x2) x2 1600mhz DDR3
Seasonic X-660
Lian Li B25F
Cooler Master 212 EVO

Now possibly looking for fan control front panel / usb port front panel

Video card still up in the air... gaming at 1920x1200 I guess I should wait for 7000 to drop and see what happens to the market. Maybe I should do a crossfire setup.. not sure

Because less volts = less likely to become a stability issue. Sandy Bridge is designed to run on 1.5V memory.
