Bass positioning

Howdy all,

I've got a Sound Blaster Live Value and a 5 piece set of altec lansing speakers...right now I have the sub under my desk, but I've noticed something with my bass. If I stand a few feet back from the desk (by the door) the bass is MUCH deeper and louder and generally what I'd like to hear while at my desk. Is there some kind of optimal positioning of a sub or any way I can position it to project to where I want it? Hints or anything are appreciated.

Thanks.

Just go ahead and try it in different places until you get what you want. Generally speaking, placing the bass module near one or more floor/wall junctions (i.e., on the floor within a few inches of the wall or especially in a corner) tends to reinforce bass output.

Another possibility is that the shape of your room combined with the present position of the bass unit creates "standing waves" that tend to cancel out the low frequency sound at your desk and reinforce it near the door. Moving the bass unit a foot or two from where it is now could make a big difference in how it sounds.

Hopefully the thing won't be in the middle of your room when you find the best sound!

Remember the howard stern movie where he gets the girl to sit on the subwoofer? Anyways...what were you saying, sorry! Yes, bass. The best trick, and people use it all the time, is find an optimal surface to bounce the bass off of. Try aiming it behind you at the back wall for a good bass sound.

The absolute best way to find the best bass spot, not easiest, but BEST.

Put the sub where you normally sit, in your chair.
YES, your sub in your chair.

Then play a heavy bass track (bass cd?) and let it play it over and over.
Go around the room, and listen to the spot with the best sounding bass (loudest + smoothest)

Put your sub there.
Sit back in your chair and enjoy!

Viperoni,

Excellent suggestion, but one question. Would you set it facing your computer, pointing up, down, where?? I personally have mine pointed into the ground in a corner of the room, and I seem to get best response there.

I've always heard if you put it facing a wall or the ground, it will enhance the frequency or sound or something like that.

Remember that bass is non-directional, so the positioning is simply a matter of getting the least distortion and best resonance..IMHO. It depends on whether you have a front firing or bottom firing unit. Like many have said just move it around till you get the most pleasing sound while seated where you are listening most of the time. I have an L shaped computer desk, with an enclosure open on one side where I place my sub, front firing toward the interior and about 2-3 inches from the interior walls.. makes for a nice mellow tone. Anytime you use on or near carpeting or heavy overstuffed furniture, the sound will be partially absorbed by the fabrics. Of course this is my personal experience, so try all the recommendations for the best result.
