Bass just cut out on Boston speakers

I've never used anything besides a $20 set of logitechs, but my uncle gave me a set. They're the BA7500 set with 4 surround speakers and the one subwoofer.

I don't have a soundcard or anywhere to put the rear speakers, so I just plugged in the two front speakers and the front cable. It worked at first, but there wasn't much bass so after a bit of searching I tried turning the surround volume knob up a bit. Bass kicked in. I played music for a bit and then tried a 40hz test. To make sure I didn't mess up I had system volume at 25% and the speakers about 40%. The subwoofer worked fine. I went back to the music to listen to it and about 20s in the bass just cut and hasn't come back on.
I also ended up plugging in the rear input and that changed nothing.

Some reviews say the sub overheats a lot but I'm not an audio guy.

I am using some super-cheap barley-shielded cables that crackle a little if I hold them right next to eachother, but I honestly doubt that has anything to do with bass.
Funny thing is that even is the bass stays off it still has a bit more than the logitechs did with their sub on full. 😛
Ideas?

I turned them back on today and they worked for a while but started cutting out again. It might just be a crappy connection or overheating. Either way I honesty doubt I have the expertise to fix it. I might take it to a local repair shop if there aren't any alternatives.

Make sure the control panel plug (blue thing) is securely plugged in.

My wife has those speakers, and if there is an open in one of the control signal connections, they can behave intermittently.

Beyond that, you might want to take it apart and check the solder connections at the control connector.
