Bass is overrated!

They just don't know how to tune it, if it's tuned right, when the right time comes, some authoritative bass can be very much appreciated. Bass is over rated as much as a Porsche is over rated, or a hawt blonde that's over rated. They're not for every body, those who have it and can get it, get it; every one else just say it's over rated.

Gosh, I love bass. I don't think it's over-rated when done right. However, I do appreciate the ability to be able to make a nice home theater sub for under $250 that will best a $700 subwoofer that's sold in stores. I guess it's just a great hobby that I enjoy. However, during most movies, I'm sure the in-room volume is no more than 75 or so decibles for me.

Note to self: Reconsider the purchase of the 500 watt per channel pro amp.

I just got a sub in my truck. I'm not trying to go deaf, but I wasn't really experiencing music without it.

We have a Velodyne HGS12 in our home theater (if that is still the proper name). We're thinking of getting a second one too.

The whole idea is to have extremely clean bass, but not overdrive the unit. I balanced the SPL (dB) between the HGS and the audio speakers, and the HGS gain is turned up about 1/4 of the way. The bass is nice and loud, but not too loud. Having the room's acoustics setup properly is also a big deal. We've coated the entire room with sound dampening material that is about 1/8" thick and weighs a TON. The walls in the room are insulated (mostly for sound proofing) and we stapled the material over the plastic netting for the insulation. Then layed sheetrock over it. Easy to do. Floor, walls, and seiling.

A lot of people like their bass to be loud just to show off, and when they do this they do not care about quality.

Personally, I use high-quality components with high-quality subwoofers and amplifiers. It costs dramatically more, but in the end it is worth it. Especially since I listen to techno, trance, electronica, etc. I also listen to rock, hard rock, metal, punk, fake emo, and hardcore rap like lil' Jon.

I also do not use my system to "show off," but for my own listening enjoyment. Impressing others is not my forté.
