Bass is overrated!

Now that I have your attention... 😀

I have seen a lot of threads recently about bass (not the fish).

While I agree that a clean bass is desireable, I have been in people's home whos pride of their HT system is a 1000 watt sub. All well and good, BUT they have this monster in a small room. It was hella unpleasant.

So, remember that bass is good, but too much creates an imbalance in the music/movie experience.

There is audio life above 20 Hz.

😀

Anyway, it's not the fault of the LFE. Tell them to turn down the gain.

No it isn't the fault of the equipment. If they had a 2 kw amp, it would be better in their mind, because more is always better. I am dissing the reasoning behind "more is better".

<----Has an Athena Ps400 that he got for $300.

I bought my sub soley on its ability with music. Albeit a little slimish with the low frequencies, topping off @ 27hz +/- 3dB, it is amazingly tight with music.

Bass is not everything......LIFE IS BETWEEN SILENCE AND PINK NOISE.

The reason people talk about it is because it's very difficult to get good, clean, tight, non-distorted bass down very low. You need a lot of power, good drivers, and a good cabinet design, along with good placement to get it. Imbalance happens more often with a poor setup than with a powerful one.

Like seriously....that dude with the 32 subwoofers; WTF is his name......why do you need sooo many subs? I would imagine bass in that quantity would be nausiating. Anyways, the omnidirectionallity of sound approaching the inaubile give is more presence, hence the need for only 1 or two subs in most setups....

I understand that. My point is not about power, but volume. I know that one may buy a powerful amp for reasons other than loudness. What I am specifically referring to is those who turn it all the way up, because louder is better.

Somewhat agree. It isn't over rated, it is however over used. My bro has built many Car audio setups as part of a homebased business and he knows his stuff. He recently(6 months back) built himself one(in a Taurus SW) and the Bass is very good-Excellent, but damn turn it down already! The problem I had was music didn't sound right. The Bass wasn't boomy it's that it overwhelmed the Treble to the point where the "tick" of the drumstick, the "pluck" of the string, and other subtle non-Bass sounds didn't exist. In short, Good Bass is Great, but All Bass is Horrid. IMO.

unless your a gaaaaaaannnggsterrrrrrr. in a home system i dont understand why people would want such huge bass unless theyre all gangsta. in a car system, ya gotta have a little boom imo 😉

The average HT guy does not calibrate his system with a SPL meter. So the bass is always overcooked. A proper tuned HT will only have accurate bass. If a sub as the ability to produce subsonic frequencies so be it, but only if the movie/music require it (encode it into track). A proper calibrated sub blends so nicley that one does not even know its their; it is heard only when it is needed to and felt only if it is needed to.

Yep, I went out and bought a cal. disk and SPL from Radio shack, although the AVR 630 is supposed to be able to auto calibrate. I guess I just like gadgets 😀

yah, my AVR 430 is also supposed to auto calibrate, but it is way too buggy; the need to learn from Yamaha or Pioneer Elite. 😉.

You purchased an indespensible tool, 🙂. A SPL is a HT persons best friend.

I totally agree with you, but I thought this thread was about beer (in which case, I would not have agreed with you)

Why? Seems to me the only difference is that when you're in your car, other people can hear you. I play my music for myself, not everyone around me.

i used to like a nice boost for everything below 80 Hz or so, but I'm so used to listening to my nice headphones with no EQ that i've taken to listening to all my music that way. i only use EQ on systems that need it to make up for a lack of frequency response.

LOL, I thought you meant the beer. 😀
