Bass dampening?

I need to find a way to dampen bass going to other rooms from my small setup. I have the Paradigm Studio 60's driven by an HK AVR 335 and temporarily a JBL PB12 subwoofer. I'll be upgrading that to an SVS subwoofer in the near future but need to figure out how to dampen the bass a little because a lot of it is traveling to the two floors above mine, I'm in the basement.

I have drywall all around with a laminate flooring however behind 3 of the 4 walls in concrete as well as under the flooring.

Is there anything I can buy that I can put behind the subwoofer so it doesn't shake the drywall and framing behind the setup? That's where most of the bass is going upstairs from.

If it's not expensive I'd like to do the same for the two Paradigm's, I've been getting complaints about the sound on those as well even without the subwoofer.

I'm in a house, parents complain. They really don't care except when it affects their sleeping.

Sorry, I didn't elaborate. Buy your OWN house. Problem solved.

What happens if his parents are living with him, not hes living with his parents.

There is stuff you can buy that dampens the sound, but its expensive and you would have to cover all walls to make it effective. Since low frequency noise is not directional, you have to make sure even the door is covered (closing it isnt good enough) to get good sound dampening.

Putting bass treatment all over the walls is needless, expensive, and [very] space-consuming.

there really isn't much you can do (edit - apart from major structural changes)

A good sub will move the floors (literally, the floor becomes a big transducer) and entire structure of the house.

I put sound insulating foam in my home theater and it still shakes the house.

If it helps you can try the night mode settings or dynamic compression to even things out.

Nah, you can cancel out the force of the driver with another driver. That eliminates a lot of "shaking" as you describe.

I'm a senior in high school, this really isn't an option. After my freshman year in college living in a dorm I will get a place of my own.

Someone I know with a $30k setup said he did this with his ProAc speakers while he was breaking them in or something.

spidey07: How much did that foam run you and how effective was it?

It was special home theater insulation (blown), works great for the mid-upper freqencies, but didn't put a dent in the bass.

-edit- I can't recall the cost, part of building the home.

Yeah I said trout. That's what they will slap you with if you keep playing it so loud! ;)
Haha, do you have a fully qualified trout slapper?

I'd turn it down but that's not fun, now is it?

If you're already getting complaints with the JBL, maybe getting the SVS isn't the greatest idea ;)

Hey, weren't you supposed to be just getting a reference to go off of with the JBL instead of having he an extended addition to your system? ;)

Yeah they have one bodacious trout slapper with six gills. At least people don't go MIA. ;)

Heh, yes, looks like my parents don't really mind me using it and so until I find a deal on something else I'll just use this. I'm considering just grabbing a new PCi and calling it a day to be honest.

But the deals, the deals!!!

On the other hand... I'd get an SVS t-shirt

Actually, to be technical, with the amount of plastic, it won't even make a scratch! :Q

edit: Do any of their other models have custom ear impressions? If so, I could consider getting maybe a pair of 12" Daytons and an iPod Nano with some nice headphones instead of one nice SVS sub...

They have several custom models from 5 to 10. They even have a hip hop model for bass freaks. :Q

Are you handy with wood? You may want to explore building your own.

Actually if you got bass dampening foam.. it will cost A LOT more than the ultimate ears.
A square foot of bass dampening foam that actually WORKS, starts at about $50 if not more. So if your wall is 10x10ft, then yes, that's $5000.

That's partly what I was expecting to be honest, looks like I may just have to get a PCi and call it a day for now. Maybe sometime in the future I can make more of an ideal room to listen to music and movies in? I'm probably a good 7-10 years away from that ;)

holy crap.

does that stuff actually work?

I thought to truly dampen bass you had to double wall the room and put insulation between them. double wall meaning decouple the entire room from the house (floor, walls, ceiling, etc)
