Basketball and Political Correctness

Exactly. When they step onto the court, I treat them like basketball players, not little kids (with some limits, of course - I do not call them worthless pieces of crap). I run my practices, chalk-talks and games just like my coaches did in high school.

This is my second year coaching my son (after one year of watching him be coached by others), and the response from my team parents has been, so far, 100% positive.

The only people who seem to not like it are parents and coaches from other teams. We will see what the league guy has to say, but I will remain very diplomatic and apologetic.

Reference all of those links you posted and I don't think it will be an issue. You flat out weren't in the wrong in any sense.

Strip it implies turning it over. His team has the ball so that would make no sense.

My son plays basketball and he's 9. Quite frankly, I'm amazed at how overly aggressive some of these coaches are. This one game the coach for the other team was yelling at the ref, telling him what call he should make. The ref actually stopped and told the coach to calm down, that he's got this. I thought he was going to eject him. 😀

Still, rip it seems like no big deal to me.

BTW-My son's team is 5:3 right now. :thumbsup:

We would also ban touch football - the type of football where you touch the player instead of slam their ass to the ground as hard and violent as possible. Reasoning: touch football teaches them to shrug it off when they are touched and this could lead to them not reporting instances of sexual abuse :awe:

I NEVER talk to the ref unless he does something I simply do not understand. I will not argue judgment calls.

I also never say anything to the other coach, players or parents.

The only people I talk to are my players. Period.

Some people are kinda put off by the fact that I NEVER shut up during games. Even when I play basketball now (I am in my mid-40's) I can still hear my coaches. I want to become that voice in my players head.

Good call. Never anger people with power. If he's like every other human who enjoys screwing with assholes, he would intentionally make bad calls just to piss you off because you're such an annoying jerk.

Power is fun, especially when it can be abused ()🙂

Some grandparents of players from the other team sent an e-mail complaining about "rip it" and that I coach by "fear and intimidation". They did not complain that I directed anything at their grandkids (which is good, since I did not).

I asked him to send me copies of the complaint e-mails (without identifying information) so I can accurately convey them to my assistant.

So, when you say "rip it!" are you saying it from your bench or are you running up to where the ball is and yelling it in the kid's face?

I think part of the issue is that I have the loudest voice you may ever hear in your life. So, not only am I vocal, I can be heard over the sound of the crowd in a small basketball gym without even using my loudest voice.

That probably freaks people out.

Reversed pussification of America continues? This is actually kinda weird because old people grew up with things that are brutally dangerous. Toy guns actually looked like guns, science things for kids used actual fire and melting lead and melting glass, and TV was a lot more violent.

Maybe modern pussy TV is weakening the minds of people who were once strong minded. Can't describe my pen ink as "black" because it might offend black people so I need to call it "blocks all frequencies of light" colored.

I generally am on the sideline moving from about half court to the free-throw line extended in front of our bench.
