Basic Windows OS Question

I am running Windows 98 SE and I have a problem with desktop icons. For example: say I have an AVI file on my desktop named "movie.avi" well on my computer it just says "movie" and has the avi icon. If I wanted to change the file type from AVI to ZIP it won't rename and it will change it to "movie.zip" and it will still be and AVI. How do I make windows allow me to rename associations??? I want to see the entire file name in the icon. Not just "movie" but "movie.avi" and I want to be able to rename it to a zip and it will change to a zip file not just to "movie.zip.avi". There must be some setting somewhere but I don't know where or how to change it. Thanks

Rename the actual file, not the desktop shortcut.

Call the file movie_avi.zip

in My Computer or Explorer
Menu: View > Folder Options
View tab
uncheck "hide file extensions for known file types"
