basic VPN question

I want to know if VPN is the right tool for what I want to do. Basically, I want to have the same style of access to server files from outside the network as I do inside the network. Right now, files are shared off the file server, and you access them through folders using the drag-and-drop style through Internet Explorer. Nice and easy to use. Is VPN what I should set up to do that from outside the network?
 
A VPN will make it appear that your machine on the internet is actually on the LAN. So it will accomplish what you are trying to do.
