So my new speakers will be delivered next week and as I am sitting here sleeving and banana pluggin' my speaker wire I started to wonder about the danger of these plugs...

If I have my receiver turned on and my speaker wire plugged in to the receiver, would I do serious damage to the receiver if the two unconnected banana plug ends (the ends that should be plugged into the speaker) of the same wire touched?

I can just picture this happening in my house as the cat tends to love to pull on the wires behind the TV. If two popped out and happened to land on each other and I flipped the receiver on would I be up a creek?

Provided its a decent quality receiver it should turn off in that case(if something is actually playing through the receiver at the time this occurs.)

This is why they have banana plugs with spacers in between.

This sorta happened to me. One of the metal spike feet on a speaker stand pierced through the side of my left surround speaker wire. The receiver shut itself off when I played surround material at a decent volume. It took a few shutdowns before I narrowed down the cause.

get the banana plugs that are connected to each other if you are worried.
