Basic questions on using used cell phone

I bought an old Verizon Motorola V750 at a yard sale today for 10 bucks, with the intention of signing up for Page Plus and checking out their network. But I'm not sure if it will work. Do I just call PP and give them an ESN number off of the phone? Or do I have to pay someone to "unlock" it? TIA...
