Basic ipod question, mass storage device or not?

If I would plug an ipod into a computer, would the computer automaticly dedect it as a mass storage device or would I always require a third party driver to connect to it?

*just thinking about the new ipod.. I want it

it will show up as a mass storage device however if you want to drag and drop songs onto it to listen to on the ipod you must either use itunes or some *ahem*other program to do so.
The mass storage device is just that, your ipod will act as a storage device only.

Exactly. Basically, the Ipood acts as if it's two drives. One mass storage, and one locked that the ipood looks for music in, that you can only alter with itunes or the far better warez programs.

Not stupid if you consider the fact that they will force you to use iTunes (or 3rd party app) for trasnferring music to your system. This gets Quicktime and iTunes into your system where you will presumably and hopefully buy music off the iTunes Music Store. This also might get you to buy Quicktime Pro and of course, they can claim a larger installed base for Quictime movies.

They still allow you full use of your iPod as an external HD device.
