Basic IDE hard drive question

I just installed an IBM Deskstar 13.5gig (7200 rpm) that's been sitting in my basement about two years. The install went OK, but My Computer/Properties only shows the drive as having 12gig of free space. The BIOS and other reporting areas do recognize the drive as a 13.5gig drive.

Is this a situation where I need to split the drive into two partitions in order for the BIOS/OS to "see" and use the entire drive? I know some older computers were limited in terms of the max size drive they could use.

FWIW, this computer is about 3 years old. I'm running an AMD K6-III 450 on an FIC PA2013 with the latest BIOS.

12 GB is not a boundary for size issues.

If in Win98, run fdisk and see what other partitions are there and whether the partition you see is 100% of the disk space. In Win2K/XP right click on My Computer, click on Manage, click on DIsk Management and you'll see the partitions there.

How much non-free space do you have there?
