Basic Hard Drive Question

Hi there,

I recently built put together and a new computer and I tried to transfer the hard drive from my old computer, a Samsung 160GB 7200RPM, 8 MB Cache. My new system is with the AMD 64 processor, and my old one was using an Intel P4. Currently, the system refuses to boot up and just restarts itself. Do I have to reinstall the OS from scratch, or do I have a hardware problem with any part of my comp? TY for your time

its not unusually for a system to not boot... especially if the old mobo and the new mobo are not closely related.

YES, you wil have to completely reinstall windows. Your not only changing every single major component, but using completly different platforms..

you can often times swap harddrives if the systems are similar (ive done it to many times to count) ie. upgraded from a via kt333 board to a kt600.

i wouldnt do that for my personal pc... for sure i do a fresh install when i upgrade mobo

but still when repairing pc's for other people (when a board needs to be replaced) sometimes they really dont want to have to reinstall all of their apps and settings. so i get a replacement board that uses the same chipset or similar chipset and rarely have a problem

I've had plug and play manage to convert between different motherboards before, the big gotcha there is if you are using SCSI or serial ata for your boot device and the controller on the new mobo is different to the old one there is no chance that you will be able to boot at all, so plug and play never comes into it.

In any case, I would reinstall windows regardless, because you never know what nasty nonfunctional device drivers are still hanging around after switching a motherboard, even if it looks to be working.
