Basic graphic cards for 1929x1080 PCs

Hi all
hopefully an easy question.

I run two Pcs on a single CRT at 1280x1024 using a KVM vga switch.
I want to upgrade the screen to 23" 1920x1080 IPS monitor.
I know the intgrated graphics i use on both machines will not support such a monitor.

What graphics card do i need for my Pcs and any monitor recommendations ?

The PCs are:
MSI K9NGM2-FID, AM2 Athlon 64 (2006), running win2000, 1xPCIe x16 slot, 1xPCIe x1 slot, not sure what version PCIe is

GIGABYTE GA-880GM-UD2H, AM3 Athlon II (2011), running win7, 1xPCIe x16 slot, 1xPCIe x1 slot, Think PCIe is v2.0

Plan to buy in uk at aria pc or scans

Pcs are used for web, watching dvd, photoshop, no gaming

Completely misread your post.
Sorry, I only know a bit about the high-end cards. For gaming.

Both of those motherboards' onboard GPUs will support 1080p output.

Not saying it'll be wonderful - particularly if you're relying on GPU decode to play back movies. But it should work.

Failing that, something like this'll do the trick.

Look for a cheap 6450 or a GT610. Both will have good video decoders but will be cheap and not use much power.
You can find them with rebates all the time in the US and show up in the $20ish range each.

A GTX 650 Ti is a great GPU. At just over $100 it beats my GTX 460 1GB which I paid over $300 for back in 2010.

I ve had a look for some 6450 and GT610 cards and i like the fact that they are pasively cooled and cheap.
Dave , I have tried to get them to operate at 1080 in the past but there were no resolution options for 1920x1080 and i am fairly sure the drivers are up to date, where am i going wrong?

The 880g board should do 1080p, I had a 785g system that would do 1080p so the DDR3 version should do it as well.
I would update the system chipset drivers and then run the newwest Ati/AMD video drivers.

The other system is a 6150. I would get a GT610 or 6450 at least for that. The 880g is weak IMO but should perform better than the 6150.

Either system would see improvement with a newwer video card, even the entry 6450 or GT610.

Did you have them hooked to a 1920x1080 monitor? If they're only detecting the 1280x1024 CRT they're not going to show you anything greater than 1280x1024.

A 16MB TNT from 1998 can do 1920x1080.

Have been messing with AMD Catalyst control center on the 880g PC and now seem to have updated drivers to something much more recent and there appears to be higher resolutions available cant test as i still only have CRT.

The 6150 system has been connected to a 1920x1080 screen in the past and had up to date drivers but displayed black bars at each end of screen. Messed with it for a few days and then it got sent back. At the moment it does not get conected to the web (contains photo work I dont wish to lose) so not sure about upgrading to latest drivers. Will get cheap card for this system, will win2000 be up to it?

I think SOME WinXP drivers work in Win2000. But I have never checked as I ran XP on my older computers.

Both Ati/AMD and Nvidia only show WinXP 32bit, no Win2000.

Looking at Nvidia's drivers, it looks like Windows 2000 hasn't been officially supported since the 7000 series.

Just download the 8.26 Nforce drivers to a USB stick and install them -- they have the video driver for the 6150 in them. And make sure you're using a monitor driver that works.

Just download the 8.26 Nforce drivers to usb and let the 6150 machine and let it get on with it. Now i do seem to have 1920x1080 and higher options in the control panel for display adapters. While installing the only things mentioned were SMBuse, Eithernet and Mediashield, but hey ho the video seems to be updated as well! I realise video playback may not be great but i will get a card if needed.

It would seem that both Pcs are ready for a 1920x1080 monitor, thats brilliant thanks to all who contributed
