Looking for a basic, reliable, and good upconverting blu-ray player for under $150?

No fancy things needed such as netflix. This is just for my parent so they can watch some blu-rays and mostly DVD's.

any recommendations?

The panasonic BD60. It has top video/audio quality. As far as I know good upconverting for dvds too.

Its $120 at BestBuy right now.

It was $149 in this morning's sale ads...and on their website. Maybe a sale at your local store. <shrug>

Nope, it was all stores and website. It looks like the sale ended man. Ive been checking back every day, it looks like they probably just ended it today. It has been $119.99 for the past like 4-5 days. Doh. The next cheapest is amazon then.

I went and got the LG BD270 for $99 bucks from PC Richards. I looked on Consumer reports and it was the lowest price blu-ray player they had reviewed.

Ya I dunno. I personally would not have gone that route. Spend the extra $30 and get the panasonic. The earlier LGs had some issues, and are known for having lesser quality video. That player is like first generation, at least the panasonic is quite a bit later.

I'll check it out and think about it. I have 20 days to return it to PC Richards. I tried the player this afternoon and looked okay with Blu-Ray but with DVD's not sure yet. I guess its hard to compare it to a PS3 which I personally have.

I don't know how GOOD it is...but I'm probably going to order this one in a couple of days. Bought the same thing at Wally-World for $148...then saw this. :(
That means I have to go brave the return line at WallyWorld...:p

What the hell is up with the redirect link? Smells like spam.

FWIW, I own the BDP60. Love it. Powres up and down extremely fast. It does take a while to read some blu rays, but its nver failed, and the video quality is superb.

The panny offer (free w/ some plasmas) was a fantastic deal.

I LOVE the smell of spam in the morning...it smells like SAVINGS!

As I noted originally, I took the one back to Wally World and was going to order one from Newegg...but last night, we were crusing around Costco and found the "costco version" (BD605) for $129.99 with a "free" HDMI cable in the box. With Costco's great return policy, IMO, this was a great deal.

Hooked the Panasonic BD605 up tonight. It does a FABULOUS job with standard DVD's...My wife had me put in her "White Christmas" DVD and considering the age and original movie quality, it looked great...then I threw in "Finding Nemo" widescreen...it had all the "WOW!" factor of seeing it in the theater.

I'm going to try to find a couple of blu-ray titles to watch over the long New Year's weekend.

Another vote for the Panasonic BD60. Got mine for $110 shipped on an Amazon deal right after Thanksgiving, and it rocks.

Just fyi, since ive been considering it myself I have been paying attention, amazon has dropped a few bucks in price for panasonic bd60. It is now only $125 with free shipping. I also noticed it has a $30 amazon on demand credit as well. Adds a little value to it.

PC Richard had the BD60 for $100 in-store through Christmas... They seem to be gone now, though. Definitely the cream of the low-price crop, unless you need Netflix.

Damn you people. I just ordered the Panny from Amazon.

:D You won't be disappointed* I just got mine and love it!

*Unless you are one of the small number of people that experience persistent freezing issues.

For those that haven't I upgraded my BD60 firmware and it improved the loading times

I haven't upgraded the firmware...yet. No way to conveniently hook the disk player to the intarwebs, so I'll have to burn the upgrade to a disk.

I'm happy as hell with the picture quality out of the Panasonic. Still looking for a Blu-Ray movie at the local redbox kiosks...but it does a fabulous job upscaling standard dvd's.

I have a sony bdp-s360, bought for $80 after BCB at dell. It loads DVDs quickly, and most blu-rays in the same time a DVD loads. The bd-live requires a 1gb flash drive to be plugged into the back of the system, which I have yet to do.

Hopefully it works flawlessly. My wife is not as forgiving as I am :hmm:

It was a toss up between the bd60 at costco and an insignia player at best buy for me. Since my money was gift cards from Xmas, and Costco doesn't accept those, I got the Insignia from BB (actually the wireless version, but other than that they're the same).

Works well and looks great. $119 last I checked for the wired-only version.

Thats kewl. I personally would not have gone that route. Insignia (best buys brand) is pretty terrible from everything ive seen.

Anyhow I finally decided and went with the panasonic bd-60k at amazon.com for $125. Signed up for for amazon prime trial for free for three months, and got 2-day shipping for free. Also comes with $30 credit for amazon on demand. Thought it was the best bang for buck for highly rated second generation blu-ray player.

yeah I was skeptical at first. But the feedback at avsforum has been generally positive. Looks like it's just a rebadged brand anyway...lots of people in this thread are thinking a rebadged LG BD370/390, with fewer bugs.
