Basic App to edit Sony Digital Camera video clips?

I have a Sony CyberShot 5.1 MP that takes video clips. I would like a program that could edit crop start/finish points and compress it so the video clips aren't so big. I am not sure what format the camera captures in but my guess would be MPEG2, but could be wrong. Ideas?????
 
Many capture MPEG4 MOV files. Can't answer the "basic" question though as I don't have basic tools. A search at Videohelp.com's tools section might yield results.
