Based on my specs, should I go with a 7900 GT or GTX?

I want to replace my 6800 GTo with either a 7900 GT or GTX? Is the GTX worth the extra two hundred dollars? My processor is a P4 3.6ghz w/ HT. I have 1gb ddr2 4200. My monitor only goes to 1600x1200. Will I be able to actually percieve a huge difference at that res? I've seen in reviews that GTX gets about an average of 15 fps more in most tested games. But, will I really see the difference? Will I see two hundred dollars worth of difference?

Oh yeah. Whether I get GT or GTX, I will most likely go with BFG or eVGA.

Your resolution does point you towards a high end card, and at reference speeds the GTX might actually be worth it, but not when overclocking is taken into account. For $350 you can get an eVGA card that offeres a jump from the stock speeds of 450/1320 (I think that memory speed is right) to 550/1580. That is a huge difference, basically equal to a 7800GTX 512meg edition at half the cost. XFX has a card of roughly equal price/performance.

Also, you will probably get more responces if you let us know what games you like to play. Playing FEAR and COD:2 will justify a better card more than WoW and CS:Source

Ok, thanks for the help. Some of the games that I play are FEAR, COD2, HL2, AOE3, Empire At War, and BFME2.

Also, do you have any idea what kind of AOE3 performance I can expect from these cards? That game is a bit sluggish at high settings with my 6800 GTo.

Well I would expect HL2 to have no problem at all with either card, and I don't have any info regarding AOE3 or Empire at War, although RTS games normally don't require that high of framerates. I don't know what BFME2 is.

As for FEAR you're looking at something like this:

76FPS on OC'd GTX and 68FPS on OC'd GT
not worth the $200 to me

COD2 is a little different.
HardOCP uses a weird review style, but they have the GTX at stock speeds running the game playable at 1600x1200 and the stock GT not able to
for you it will be important to know if the GT can make the jump to 1600x1200 once you factor in an overclock. I don't know for sure, but I bet it will.

i say you get a evga 7900 gt first, see for yourself if it's enough for you

if you don't feel like it's adaquete even with ocing
then you just have to step up to gtx and pay the difference

A little off-topic, but is it true that the 7900GTX cannot have HDR+AA enabled while the X1900XTX can do both simultaneously and that's the reason why it's slower than 7900GTX in most benchmarks?

depending on the method the game implements

congrats on hitting golden member, and to elaborate for those unfamiliar, basically nvidia cards can do HDR+AA in Source engine games (Half Life 2: Lost Coast and Day of Defeat: Source). In (all?) other games you need a X1900 series. And like Moon said this has nothing to do with benchmarking you may see unless it's specifically a HDR+AA benchmark.
