Baseboard heaters is suck

so it's 50° F in our apartment so my roomie decides to turn on the heat in his room. This is a good thing, because his dad said that if we turn on the heat, he'll give us $50 towards our electricity bill (and with 3 people right now, it's only around 40) so I'm like hey free heat w00ty!


WRONG
damn this thing stinks! it smells like it's going to burst into flames any second and take my math homework with it!

What would you need to heat your baseboards for?

The smell will go away after a while, they always smell bad when you first turn them on.

I haven't had mine on in over two years, my waterbed keeps my room tolerable even in the middle of winter.
