Slugging third-sacker Phinneas "The Big One" Gaspain of the Troy Haymakers clouted a game-winning bloop single on July 10, 1871 and was rewarded by his weeping teammates with a brand-new, candy-red bicycle, complete with nifty basket and a bell on the handlebars. Thus was the expression "hitting for the cycle" not coined. It wasn't until July 10, 1901, that first baseman Harry Davis of the Philadelphia Athletics clouted a single, double, triple, and homer in the same game and became the first player to hit for the cycle ? although Harry wasn't given one.
